I'm pretty sure the way the ps3 works is that it looks at the pen drive first (pseudo jig), checks if its valid hardware (real jig - valid eeprom etc.), then boots.

After the validation, you can then do all the other fancy stuff.

So it wont be a matter of getting the files, and copying them to a new drive, you will still need the jig hardware.

Does anyone know of any forum threads where someone has purchased one of these?
The news sites are beginning to pay attention, but are being cautious until its confirmed. I hope this doesnt cause sony to put out a rushed update that patches the machines before people are aware of its existence.

To be honest I thought the PS3 was like the everest of hardware security. I find it a bit unbelievable that it has been hacked by a USB mod chip.

Sony had to release this to boost lagging sales compared to the 360, then they will patch it by Christmas - lol

If this pans out, I will finally get a PS3 and keep it this time and try the PSN online. Now just waiting for the usb dongle to be hacked or cloned -  The Irony!!

It is confirmed by several people.

PSx-scene was the first source to confirm, and its hosted by Garyopa`s company (yes, that garyopa from hitachi fw), so the minute this was annouces i had no doubt it was real Cheesy

Garyopa himself talked about the dongle on psx-scene board Cheesy

Seeing the way this is working, like Jigkick or Pandora for PSP, and anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but seems it can't be patched on hardware out there. The only thing they can do is release a new PS3 like they released the PSP3000 (and PSP2000 with TA088 v3) to make this 'pandora' PS3 USB stick non working.

Its also in there before the official boot sequence, if its a copy of what Sony uses in their own repair centre, then Sony made the same mistake twice like they did with the PSP.

Most funny thing is, many PS3 fans shouted the PS3 is unhackable, but it turns out the 360 is even more secure now with only a DVD drive hack (yes I know the JTAG is there, but it can be patched by MS with updates after summer 2009). This is pretty funny if you ask me, making any PS3 a full devkit.

It appears to contain a 48 pin MCU, nothing else (except for a crystal and resistors/caps).

We will be able to make one for $1.00 by next week. Everyone just trying to cash in quickly before the tutorials and firmware comes out. These usb dongles will become "Jailbait", as it will have copyrighted code and Sony's legal team will do something to protect their interests in the coming weeks.

They have a very short window to make as much money as possible before it gets copied. In addition I expect their production capacity will be limited, probably due to have to pay for the manufacturing up front, and they will sell whatever they produce.

So the price makes perfect sense to me.

all we need to do is use a hexedit to open the pen drive up and save all the hex from one drive and export it to another pen drive and that should work fine  Grin

It's a little more advanced than that.

However, I suspect the same techniques used to clone USB license keys will work.  By this, I mean USB devices that store a software license on them but are not detected as a common MSD.  My workplace IT dept. uses cloning techniques because they don't trust us with the original USB devices, we'd probably spill coffee on them or something.

*EDIT* I should also point out the cloned dongles are not just USB flash devices.  They are still FLEXid hardware, but they can be programmed (the cloning) by the end user *EDIT*

can Sony block this in a firmware update fast ? or do they also need to reverse this first ? cause it could be a problem if they can't use their own recovery software/hardware(jig) device. ?

Simply they can develop another service jig with custom firmware on it, and after next system update current will not work anymore.

yeah but that would mean they can't really close the backdoor only blacklist the current jig device.

I've seen one for 129,99 EUro already which is about the 170 USD that OZmodchips asks. In SPain I saw one for 99,99.

They're roaming the market for early adaptors @ a high price before the clones come in, settle their brand name and rebate them as soon as cheaper alternatives are there. Best is to wait a bit, clones will be there soon enough.
