I have a xbox 360 that I can do the jtag hack on (ordered the jtag/xnand kit), and I'm wondering if I will also need to do the DVD firmware also?

I'm assuming the hacked loader takes away the need for that, but I haven't found anything saying either way.

thanks

Try reading a README

It depends entirely on what you want to use the 360 for once it's been exploited.

If you want to be able to play backups then yes, you will need to reflash the DVD firmware in order for the discs to be recognised as authentic 360 game discs. Alternatively you can use Iso2God to convert an ISO image into a Games on Demand (GOD) container to play from your 360's hard drive. Obviously I'm pretty biased when it comes to using GOD containers though Smiley

you can still play backups from disc without a drive flash.... but you cant burn the images like you do for a non-jtag console, you would have to extract is DATA files and burn those on the disc, without the "normal" 360 iso structure.
if you have many backups lying arround then you should still flash the DVD Drive

i find you relating DVD firmware mod and JTAG hacking weird

are you sure you're capable of doing the JTAG hack

there's many assumptions like this to be made

I wasn't planning on playing backups off of disk.  I just wasn't sure if the DVD drive had to be flashed to read regular disks or something.

When I first got my Xbox 360, the jtag thingy was just starting, so everyone used the dvd firmware hack to play backups, which I wasn't against doing, just I wanted to run homebrew.

I came across the Free60, saw that it was possible to get homebrew on 360's, but not possible yet on my version (jasper, arcade).   I at the time, stopped connecting to xbox live, which was before they did the bad update in the summer of 2009.

Since then, instructions on how to do the jtag on my console appeared, and I wasn't comfortable with my soldering skill to do it, so I waited while improving on my skills.   Since then, the xnand-jtag kit came out, and i'd be a fool not to use that, so I ordered one.   Should be here hopefully by this time next week.

I have whats needed to flash my dvd drive.  Well, the sata card & the componets to build the cable thingy for reading the firmware.   But honestly, I don't want to deal with it if I don't have to, and it seems i don't have to.

Appreciate the answers to my question.  Hopefully i answered anyone else's.   I did try searching around for an answer to this question and it seems that it's not asked that much or i used the wrong search terms.

thanks again

nyder,  bottom line is get 3 good nand dumps just make sure of that.....
that unit hooked up right is a no brainer...lol
a good starting of the manual way is check each dump by opening it in a HEX editor,
 and seeing
1)ÿO.`......€.....© 2004-2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved..........
or 2004-2009 depends on the unit..that's a start...
2) show a file system in 360flashtool and valid info...no insane characters ...
3) don't erase or write nothing but the xell hack for that unit(this is where most start messing up)...
then write xell along with the kv and power down from the back of the 360(unplug for 25 secs).
then re-power only with eject(make sure the dvd drive is intact)..
then you can grab your CPU key and check for a valid kv in 360flashtool...before you write anything else,
(most are messing up here and just installing xbr or freeboot...don't know why i 'd rather have my key first for valid info...
your nand reader should be fast and flawless...if there are errors don't hook to any usb port leading to a wire hookup..
(meaning only a usb post directly off the mobo) and don't have anything to any post but the nand reader/flasher..
I even converted my usb kb to ps2 just for my 360 troubleshooting pc...
i am going to start catching you damm noobs before you mess $#!t up...
my site is filled with more troubleshooting and nand messed up questions then re-balling ones...
there's no help for the restless that can't take there time...
not that i can't work em out.. but  it takes time and a lot of testing...(mobo and ripping nand info apart)
so i figure i catch you from the start...lol
good luck....

Ok, since no one really gave a full answer here it is:

You don't have to do the DVD firmware hack, you CAN run games from burned dvds but only if they've been extracted and then burned like that, if you burn them the regular iso -> (abgx) -> imgburn way it won't work. That said, it's way easier to hack a dvd drive on a JTAGged console because with xell you have access to DVD key without having to extract it from the drive. This makes Lite-ons a walk in the park, since all you have to do is build an iXtreme image for your drive using that DVD key (and optionally serial data from stickers on the drive itself) and then just flash it as usual.
