Some one earlier said that if M wanted to make a unhackable drive they could have done it years ago, M don't really give a sh&^ about IP protection, but they care about the integrity of their home gateway device.
The fact that secured microcontrollers have been used in engine management units in cars for decades (yeah decades) to prevent people from stealing the code and making cheap knockoffs is indicative of the fact M have never even tried to protect the dvd drive apart from an appearance to care in case some large IP holder decides to sue them for lack of protection.
That decap has always looked dodgy to me from a manufacturing perspective u would never put a die on top like that, the manufacturability would be a nightmare and so would the yield, it is almost a gift, given the secure patent that was floating about back then, that if true would have made things incredibly difficult if not impossible. But decaping competitors technology is common place in the semiconductor industry, one can learn an enormous amount by studying the wroking die with a electron microscope, that said if a semiconductor company wants to spend the money they can put a extra layer of metal on top which makes things very tough, it would be interesting to decap a current liteon drive (not the slim one) to see if they have that dodgy extra die still floating around in there...lol
If the new drive is dumpable, consider yourself lucky, its another gift, a distraction from what M really don't want to be hacked, the kernel and the CPU keys.
