Hey there,

i know this may sound like a noob question, but I seriously don't know how to identify my Pioneer drive as 111 or 111D ?

I just bought this thing, the sticker says "111", but these are known to be often mislabled as I read. DVDInfoPro tells me also its "111", but on the other side when I click on "RW" it tells me "Pioneer drives do not support bitsetting". As far as I can see, this drive has the firmware rev 1.06.

I know I have to update the firmware, but I don't know if I should use a 111 or a 111D firmware. And I don't know if I should use the official 1.19 firmware from Pioneer or if I should use this "Dangerous Brothers Team"-Firmware, and what revision of it?

I'd greatly appreciate any help of yours,

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php  search pioneer dvr-111

Essensially the same hardware.  See the two links.  The 111D is much more common throughout the globe, the 111 was mostly japan, 111b is a little more adaptable than than 111, more FW options.
DVDINFO is misleading they both do auto bittsetting of DL+R right out of the box.  It just can't be changed, its "Auto" to dvd-rom, which almost if not all dl+R are, auto-set to dvd-rom.  But they don't all write as well as the pioneer.  DvD-info won't say it but after you burn you can use dvd-info to check the media properties after you burn your first dl+r with it and it will say dvd-rom.

Hacked firmwares can be little risky this partical series of drives.  If your just trying burn DL+R back-ups of xbox360 games just stick with official firmware's if you updgrade to avoid flashing issues. And I would just burn with the stock FW first.

If you want the best hacked firmware that has all bells and wistles, buffalo, makes the best hacked fw for these drives.  But if you read below, their are some issues flashing to some of the various hacked firmware's with these drives.

Well I just burned my first backup with my newly bought Pioneer 111 with its stock firmware and it works flawlessly. I used Ridata media, I also have Verbatims here.

I'd say the theory that this firmware hack works perfectly with Pioneer burners and hq media is confirmed, at least for me.

I'm gonna go and backup all my games now.
