I'm Jtagging a new falcon; however, I was wondering if I'll need to cool mod it. Does it heat a lot like the Xenon? Or is it stable like the Jasper? If I'm on the stock cooling, how long should I keep it running before putting it to cool down?

falcon GPu runs a lot cooler than xenon
the mod that had the biggest temp decrease for me was dividing the shroud.

Install xexmenu, and take a look at the temperatures screen in xexmenu When you have your temperatures, you can decide what to do
Over around... 90š degrees (celsius) there are permanent damages in the motherboard and appears the ring of death

The chip will most likely be spec'd to operate up to 85 C. The Xbox probably doesn't flash overheat code until closer to 90C like Sandungas mentioned.
However, Sandungas has explained in detail in other threads and many others have also explained that it's the heating/cooling cycles that causes RROD, not the actual temperature. However, if you can reduce the magnitude of the temperature cycling, you can therefore reduce board warping.
Falcon's that have the GDDR chips on the bottom should probably get the Xecuter thermal pads to ensure they stay on. Falcons without bottom chips are less likely to have RROD.
Personally, IMHO I think the temps should be kept below 70 C after long gaming session in order to have high confidence that RROD is unlikely.
If XeXmenu indicates you are above 70 C after an hour of gaming I suggest adding some extra cooling fans.

That goes for jasper, but falcons and xenon/zephyr can run hotter. Basically, if it doesn't go into overheating mode or spins the fan to max speed, you're still within spec. They didn't put in the overheat shutdown for nothing.

I'm thinking of removing the DVD drive and the upper half of the case. What I'll do next is that I'll put the 360 facing a big fan to drive the hot air away. Will that be a good idea?

My friends Xenon GPU runs at over 90c. Thatīs definitely too hot.
If you are gonna remove DVD-drive, just change the GPU-heatsink to CPU-heatsink, and modify the airtunnel(?) so it fits nicely. Really efficient cooling modification.

I wanted to keep my falcon cool, but keep it looking and sound as stock as possible. A 50x15 fan on top of the auxiallary GPU heatsink set at a barely audible level combined with a silent intake fan on the right side of the case keeps my temps in low to mid 60s with 1 hour gaming.

How do I know if my Falcon has the chips at the bottom? Can it be known from the manufacture date? I don't wanna disassemble the xbox again as the Jtag wires may come lose.

if your afraid you soldering will come loose just by taking the xbox apart then your soldering must be pants
did you not tape or hot glue the connections after soldering?
i dont know why you are so concerned about cooling, unless you are playing the xbox in 40 plus degree celsuis temperatures you should be ok with stock cooling
best option is to stick a whisper fan in, split the fan shroud, and apply a good thermal paste to the processors, and keep the console in a well ventilated area away from any heatsources.
anything else is overkill.

This is my 3rd box, so I want to make sure it'll never die out (Even though none of the first 2 died of RRod!). Is the Nyko Intercooler TS a good cooling solution?

It's not a good thing here in Egypt. The cheapest falcon arcade is 1500 EGP, which would be equal to $300!

can't believe your considering a Nyko Intercooler
that thing is a POS, from which ,I believe, a forum member here proved it's totally useless, as it makes the temperatures go up by a few degrees compared to stock

Out of interest, do you know the airflow rating of the fan you used? I've been looking into cooling my Falcon as it's running a little bit too hot form what everyone has said, at around 70-75C for the GPU after an hour of gaming. It tends to idle around 65C though, which doesn't seem too awful. I'm not a hardware person really, but I'm assuming to power an additional fan like that I could just connect it to the 12v from the bottom of the PSU connector on the motherboard?

I think I'll go ahead with this and the fan shroud mod.

The airflow rating of my 50mm fan is 17 CFM @ 12 V, the rating of my intake fan is 6 CFM at 12V. I have no idea what the CFM is for those two fans when I'm undervolting them.

Thanks Blackaddr, much appreciated. I'd seen a couple of 50mm fans that were rated for CFM in the mid-20s, but were pretty loud. Looks like I should be able to get away with some less powerful fans so I can keep the noise down.
