Hi guys, Been reading around, and want some opinions. I've got a new box (well... refurb), and am planning on modding it. I will not be taking it on live, so that's a non-issue. So my details... LiteOn DG-16D2S manufactured sept 2008 HW - A0A1 FW - 74850C planning on building my own probe with this tutorial: http://xbox-experts.com/tutorial/assembling-a-liteon-probe-pictorial/ That alright? need to pick up a SATA pci card I guess. I have this: Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers....but I don't think this will work? What should I get? What firmware should I use? Noticed the one just released (Christmas was a little late)....is that the best one? Finally, I'll be following the Jungle Flasher tutorial. This is the best available, correct? Sorry for the newb questions, been out of the modding scene since the original xbox. Thanks in advance.

You're not planning on checking the kernel and CB versions? You can skip modding the drive completely if you have an exploitable kernel and CB. You simply put the files straight to hard drive (with a patched xex), or burn the ripped files directly by flashing your nand with XBR or freeboot.

If your good with a soldering iron then I'd definately check out the XBReboot option it hardly costs anything to do except for time and opens you box up completely. Check out. http://www.***.com/forums/xbox-360-discussion/164321-jtag-freeboot-xbreboot-faq.html http://www.***.com/forums/xbox-360-tutorials/164479-do-jtag-hack-dump-nand-xell.html You will need to do the hack to check if your CB is vulnerable to modding. You cannot be 100% by firmware revision alone as. Also consider doing the R6T3 hack which is basically just a removal of a resistor which will safegaurd accidental firmware updates that can cripple your system. Have fun.

you still need a modded drive if you plan on using burnt games (atleast the usual ones)

Why do people make up stupid things? Refurbished xbox's are 10x more likely to have an exploitable CB.

why do people make people think they are making up things, when it was already confirmed that repair centre's are not handing out Xbox 360's anymore with exploitable CB's - for a long time

Last time I checked he didn't mention when it was sent it in for repair. It might have been sent it in 6 months ago. Good job at reading details though.

hey all, thanks for the responses.
I don't think my kernel or CB is exploitable, as its 8507 (dashboard 2.0.8507.0). Too bad, that would have been better. There's no way to downgrade or anything? If there is, do i still need to flash my dvd drive to play backups?
Otherwise, what firmware should I use, and what SATA card should I get?
And i should use the jungle flasher tutorial, that DIY probe is fine, and my ultra ata won't work, correct?

New on the forum but not new to hacking hardware and such.
From what's posted elsewhere, you can't downgrade it. But you can flash the drive with the Lite-on iXtreme 1.61 to play backups on it.
I have successfully flashed Samsung, BenQ, and Hitachi using the onboard SATA of motherboards with nVidia nForce2 and 680i chipsets. The 680i flashed them just fine from SATA Port 6 even with drives connected to the other 5 with the latest version of jungleflasher. You just have to make sure the right Port is selected. The nForce2 chipset is what I'm using now (old computer parts put together that only gets used for 360 flashing and ripping) and it works without any issues. I am waiting on a CK3 and probe to get the key from a Lite-on exactly like yours before I erase it, but I'm sure it will work just fine with it. One thing to remember, once you've erased the Lite-on's firmware after pulling the key from it, you can only flash iXtreme to it since you can't dump the firmware. So be sure you won't change your mind about it later on.
JungleFlasher works fine with Win XP, but you can also use Win 7. If you read and use JungleFlasher's PDF tutorial it will tell you everything you need to know on using it. I keep finding myself wasting time searching for an answer to a question by Googling it before I remember to look in the PDF which ends up answering most of my questions.
I have been using a modded 360 for playing backups that doesn't connect to the internet. As long as it never does, you shouldn't have any problems with it being banned, or swapping your hard drive back and forth with an unmodded one that does go on Live.

Hey charincol. thanks for the info, very helpful! So no downgrades, ok. Flash the LiteOn iXtreme 1.61, as in the one here: http://www.xboxhacker.org/index.php?topic=13383.0 that right?Did some more searching, looks like I have a compatible chipset build into my mobo, Intel i945P A1, [southbridge] Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) [info from CPU-Z] (called Intel 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller in device manager). iPrep 101 says its MTKFlash and DosFlash compatible. I'll be using jungleflasher in XP (and their guide), attempting with my mobo's sata, and building my own probe.
