@IntoBeing

right after you format your hdd in the x360, use the same dashboard menu to "rename" your hdd, give it any name you want and it will create the name.txt file.

After you've done that you should see that file at the expected place depending on your hdd size, you can easily find it using the "magic number", giving the hex position of this file, published here and there and usually associated with the modification of xplorer360.

"The Easiest Method To Swap In A Larger Hdd And Transfer Data, No Hex Editing, No Xplorer360"

By Spegs12 @ X-S (slightly modified by me) Original post

Homebrew consoles only

1. With the original HDD in your console, sign out of your profile and launch XeXMenu via DVD
(press B when asked to sign in)

2. Obtain FTP access to your console.

3. Transfer Hdd1 and HddX to your PC.

4. Replace the original HDD with the new larger one.

5. Format the new drive from the dashboard, and rename it if you wish.

6. Download hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 (from the usual places) aka xbins Roll Eyes and put it on a USB stick

7. Launch XeXMenu again, and run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 (default.xex)

8. Reboot console

9. FTP the contents of Hdd1 and HddX over to your newly installed HDD.
(delete name.txt from your back up first)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: You may have to run the avatar update after doing this. (I had to)

Reinstall avatars by downloading the Fall 09 update from Microsoft...

SystemUpdate_Fall09_8955.zip

This update will have no ill effect on a console running XBReboot.

Just extract the folder and put it on a USB stick, the update will automatically start when you place it in you console.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used this method today, to transfer from a 120GB to a 2TB

I got 18 errors while transferring from the old drive, such as this...

Could not retrieve directory listing
"/Hdd1/Content/0000000000000000/4D530888/00000001/": Path not found.

I was using WinSCP, but it turns out it did actually copy those folders Huh Smiley

So I think it's safe to choose "skip all" the first time you see this error.

I didn't have any errors when restoring to the new drive.

With these slight changes to Spegs12's guide, you shouldn't have to get involved while making the backup, due to being asked what to do about overwriting files, i.e. XeXMenu's files if you had it installed on the HDD, and name.txt, you can walk away and let it get on with it.

My backup (105GB) took around 2hrs, and 2.5hrs to restore.

I'm thinking this could probably have been done via SATA rather than FTP?

Sorry for lowering the tone of this thread, but you have to admit it's a lot easer lol

Thanks for this. I'm trying this after the original method didn't work (hex wasn't able to find name.txt). I'm up to point 5, formatted drive within dashboard, but how do I now reinstall Xexmenu in order to run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 please?

Ok now managed to find name.txt. Problem was that I hadn't renamed the hdd.

Complete the the tut by threesixtyuser, but with the new hard drive connected, I get an E71 error on boot? Any ideas where I might have gone wrong?

Started from stratch using tut by threesixtyuser (on page 4). New drive complete and boots, however, contents folder and installed game are missing. Shouldn't the new drive be a mirror of the one its replacing?

I copied over all missing content and games, however, getting unexpected results. For example, when I try to save a new formattion in Fifa 10, 360 hard reboots itself?

Heres what i did !

Transferred all the stuff via ftp to pc (onboardmu.hdd1,hddx,game,flash dirs)

Then formatted the Samsung 640GB on the x360

I did run the partition fixer

And now m passing all the stuff back to the newer hd via pc ftp

What m puzzled for is that the hd now has only 2 partition one named : Partition 2 and Partition 3

I have no Partition 1 like the old 250GB "official" hd had Huh??
Whats wrong ?

I agree is totally noobie friendly, but also, can take days (like migrating from a 320gb to 1tb).

If you have available space, you can just follow this very tutorial (I mean, the one from the OP or Patstew), it may take a while to image 320gb, not as long as 100000000000 files...

If you don't wanna mess with your drive numbers, you can take the first partitions of any of your 20gb, and take Partition 3 from the drive you want to clone, you just need to 0 fill it, format on 360, give it a name, and follow the tutorial.

Ok I have tried a few of theses tuts and I finallt got to where I see my files on the drive from my old 20gb stock,, Now all I had right now was a 40gb non oem and system is freeboot and jtaged,, i have zerod the hard drive since it was on a ps3, formatted it on xbox 360 and named it.  Now when I want to transfer files using xtreme xplorer 2,, or other apps most files give access denied or failed,, even if I backup the 20gb image and restore on 40gb xbox shows the used space but everything is empty,,, so im not sure what to do anymore.  The latest tut you have for jtag on here works as i said and I can see all files they are just empty and cant or wont transfer all files without error.

Hi all.

I've been using for some time a 320gb drive, but just ordered a 1tb drive to install (12.5mm so will have to dremel the shell a little bit to fit)

Anyways, I've been pondering the best way to get this nearly full drive transferred over to the new 1tb drive.  I don't relish the idea of ftping a zillion files across a wifi.

I've read through this thread and a few google searches etc and intend to ideally use the guide from threesixtyuser on page 4 (could this not be stickied?)

I'm wondering however.....while reading through it......

Smaller/Older drives were 512 sector drives.

IIRC I believe the 1tb drive I purchased is a 4k sector drive, and somewhere searching I read that the 360 would format it to 4k sectors too?

That has made me wonder though, when it comes to calculating the sectors for each part as per the guide, will I have to factor in the fact that the new drive sector size would also be different, meaning everything will need to be moved around a lot more and recalculated?
