I was trying to upgrade a friend's Hitachi 0079FL drive from Ixtreme 1.4 to 1.51. To read the firmware, I used the Slax CD to get it into mode B, then the 79Unlock CD to get it into a flashable state. So, first I restored the original stock firmware, which I'm told is necessary before upgrading Hitachi firmware. I checked at this point and only retail games were playable.
I then tried to flash using Firmware Toolbox, but I guess I selected the wrong option and botched it. Now, I can still get the drive into mode B, and the drive still ejects, but the 79 Unlock CD isn't recognized by the computer as it was just hours ago. In addition, retail and burnt games now give me an "open tray" message when I try to play them. Have I bricked the drive? Or is this fixable? Thanks!

nope not bricked.....you have to re-erase in dos mode.....and slow down and take your time....  don't forget to grab the port number so it's easier to see in dos.... this is only 1 suggestion...... Happy New Year... |

nothing is done in dos for hitachi you are being fed incorrect info.
hitachi flash only done in windows no dos flashing lol
if you are getting open tray errors and discs wont read perhaps you have fuxored your laser?
replace the laser and if you still get errors then replace the whole drive if you have orig.bin and key etc.

Also of note - when I put a disc in after putting the drive into mode B, the drive appears to spin for just a second and then stop. well if that was the case then you have changed your drive key, nothing else, the drive would still play dvd movies just not games. also the symptom of dead laser is the disc only spinning for a second when you insert a disc the motor spins and the laser checks for a disc if it gets reflection it knows there is a disc and if there is no reflection it stops the motor as there is no disc sound familiar?? still wanna bet the laser is ok? youd be surprised how delicate the lasers are especially when the drive they are in is moved around outside of the console. but hey keep your head up ur ass and not take any help thats your decision. |

Really......i guess you never unlocked/unbricked a hitachi in dos strange how it has been done many times using the port address calls or maybe, it was a dream........bummer well anyway.what ever you think.. |

Okay, now this is insane. Just after putting in the new laser, retail games run fine. But then I use the Slax CD and try to run the 79Unlock CD, but I still can't get the CD to be recognized. So I try hook the drive back up to the 360 and try a retail game, and it says "open tray" again! I know I couldn't have broken the laser this time, as I didn't even remove the drive from the 360 to plug in the SATA cable. I literally did nothing that I'm aware of that could've caused harm to that laser. f***, I think I'm just gonna buy a new Samsung drive and be done with this Hitachi $#!t.

just to think what made you spend money,gavingt now if you would do what most would do and have done many times...you wouldn't of needed to spend would you? all i am going to say is ,now read back and do it through dos...you have nothing to loose do you?... |

I don't drink...... when I get time i will put up a video on how to unbrick a Hitachi drive on boot up using dos...been there done it many of times....but this topic is about the user needing help and is going to stick to that only.i am sure he is pissed as of now. for misinformed info and costly at that ......i am done here.....

well i for one would be interested to see how this is done, for years now i have been told by experts on these forums that the only recovery method for hitachi is to read it in willem no1 has ever mentioned a software method. ever. |

Thanks! a total bricked one don't react to nothing and is not seen in bios or dos....the user did not claim this... second.. there's is a few older dos programs for the Hitachi... look in the right place and you will see...all this was for is the answer of nothing is done in dos for hitachi you are being fed incorrect info.

that's all that was and after a infectus2 or a programmer can do this...and then be seen in bios,dos and windows i was talking about after the fact ..so maybe i was stating it wrong... gavingt, if you say you can get it in modeb can't you try a soft unlock? |

the 'dos' programs you are referring to, do you mean the bat files used to dump the hitachi?
those run in a msdos prompt (cmd.exe) and not in true dos, like dosflash16 (not32) does.
id still love to see your dos app that reads a bricked hitachi that would be userful if real.
