So I've fixed numerous 360s with 3 red rings, but this time is different - as soon as I turn it on, the fans spin for a second and then stop, and the system instantly shows 3 red rings. I know that this isn't typical of a system with bad solder, so I'm wondering what I might be doing wrong.
I should note that I'm fixing it for a friend, and I don't have his power supply. The 203-watt brick I have works, but it fits awfully tight into the back of the mobo and doesn't click like it should. Could the problem be that I need the actual power supply that came with the system?
I wish I could get a secondary error code, but it looks like I melted the sync button! Oops! Any way around that?

No, the 203W PSU works on any model. Sounds to me like you have a short under one of the chips, or a completely broken connection.

Thanks for the speedy reply. When you say broken connection, do you mean a solder connection? Would it be worth it to try heat gunning again?

you can try, but chances are it'S beyond recovery.. especially if you have solder blobs that ran together under one of the chips.

well can be a cap (dry= is almost dead. dead=getting about 1/4 of the supplied voltage to it) or shorting (look for any bulging splits on top) or a resistor opening up(or missing) if you can, slowly go over the bottom of the board from the GPU going back in-between the southbridge and ana/hana chips for missing parts and on top . hard to say if you said the fans shut down within seconds...still sounds like a solderball uncoupled itself from the GPU....can you see any of the solderballs under the ends of the gpu? there's enough room for you to have a look. also any small warps or to in that area.......sounds like a lot..but what the hell it's all visual right....lol

if the sync button was melted there are quite a few other things that possibly went wrong. personally i think that this unit would most likely be too far gone for repair

thats the same as one of my boards i had to fix, didnt turn on, fans for a second, 3 lights, it was 0003 error bad gpu/cpu reflow, you could try and reflow again or you could try and get gpu/cpu reballed if you can. or keep the board for spares as i did..
