So I successfully flashed my xbox with XBRebooter, booted it up, and everything seemed fine.  I had an old 20GB hard drive (pre NXE update) that I wanted to use with this box, so I plugged it in and it recognized the drive as normal.  I decided to format the drive so I could start off fresh.  When I selected format, It asked me for the serial #, so I punched it in and it froze.  I powered down, then powered back up to the dreaded three red lights.  I rebooted again, this time with a wired controller in the back port and booted into Xell.  I copied down my CPU key rebooted, got the three red lights again.  I then reflashed the patched XBR image, rebooted, and the system came back to life.  I was configuring the settings as you would on a new xbox when it froze again.  Now it won't even boot into Xell.  I have tried erasing the Nand and flashing the original back, just to keep getting the 3RLOD.  This is an older (2006) system that didn't have a 3RLOD problem prior.  As precaution I installed the upgraded GPU heatsink, used arctic silver 5, and did the x-clamp mod.  Has my box simply met an untimely death?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Most likely. Check your secondary error code, see what that says.

So there shouldn't be any problems with formatting a hard drive under XBR?  Like I said, I know it wasn't connected to any system that was updated to the Summer 09 update.  It read the drive just fine, until I tried to format.  I will check the secondary code when I get home.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I agree, it should have been fine.  It sounds like the system is dead, when you check the secondary code, please post an update!

the only time messing with the nand will give rrod is if you f***ed the nand so it reports false red ring, or if you didnt let the cpu reset (unplugging power after flash)

if you got your system booted, and played with it.. it was working

the red ring occured because of a legitimate red ring.

test it out. overheat it with no fan on, let it cool once it overheats and i bet it turns on.

Well, secondary code was 0102, or E18, which is "Problem with the digital backbone.  Possibly due to a cold solder joint."  I got this specific box on ebay knowing that it would be a good XBR candidate.  I also got it because it had been refurbished.  Maybe my logic is backwards?  I guess I should go for one that has't been refurbished.  This is the fourth 360 I've had give the 3RLOD.  I've always done the xclamp mod, upgraded the fan, and switched to arctic silver 5...all still eventually lead to failure.  These 360's are pieces of $#!t!

well not everything is fixable via xclamp fix, if u fix it by xclamp the only logical thing is ur xclamp is bad or your ram chips is flexing, try adding something to the ram from flexing.

0102 is specific case of memory problem. In your case, cold joints are causing the GPU to be unable to communicate with the RAM. So yes, clamp mod it.

I tweaked my xclamp mod and loosened the screws a bit.  The unit began to boot (showed the xbox boot screen) and then the fans kick into high and it shuts off with two red lights (overheating).  I guess this system is done for.  I guess I could use it to unban a banned console down the road?  I was able to write down the CPU key back when I booted into Xell.  Are the fuse values needed too?

or you could overheat to reflow the solder like i mentioned. it will atleast give you a few days of play.

A heat gun isn't exactly a proper way of fixing it.  That's why people don't buy a $20 heat gun.  I understand, what have you got to lose if it doesn't work, but odds are it will only work for a little while if at all.  Can anyone answer my question about needing the fuse values in addition to the CPU key?

Other than reballing or using a proper reflow station, a heatgun is the best substitute.

I have fixed a few hundreds of dead Xbox 360s (As well as several dev kits) using a cheap ~$40 heatgun with the right temperature. As long as you have experience in knowing what you are doing, and how the process is correctly executed, you are fine.

And no. The update LDV is not needed when building the XeLL image
