I assume using live update is risky.  How about downloading the update and burning it to CD?  Would that be the way to go?

If you put a disk in and it tells you it needs to update, the update is on the game disk.

And what do I do?
Well I accept the update and away I go.

dont think that will save you from ban if that is your thought.

once you are flagged you are flagged simple.

Thanks,
I always thought that referred to a console update via live update (or downloading it manually ).

I never play online.  Just don't want to lose full functionality of the HDD.

then you should be ok to update from disc as i dont think m$ can ban unless you connect to their servers.

there's a way to know the minimum dash/kernel version needed by a game?

I believe the update depends on which Wave the game is.  Each "wave" is a new update added to the video region on the disc.  Not all dashboard updates are released as games.  So the August 09 update is the fourth to be packaged with games.

If you want to play newer games but keep the console exploitable, you have to use FreeBoot to boot the later consoles while having 7371 installed.  If the console is no longer exploitable (summer upate or later installed) then it can no longer be exploited, take the latest updates and play your games.  The latest dashboards do prevent you from playing backups with a modded DVD drive.
