I am having trouble getting my Hitachi 79FL drive into Mode B. Apparently, the BIOS doesn't recognize the drive.

Specs: IBM ThinkCentre Desktop PC
OS: Windows XP and Ubuntu
SATA Controller: Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA
SATA Ports: 2
Other HDDs//media devices are on Paralel ATA, so SATA is unused.

DVD is powered by the console. If there's any more info needed, let me know.

Thanks,
Ells

grab the PCI card that has a via 6421 chipset on it, the best for all types of drives and cheap.

i'd reccomend then use unlock79 cd and JF to get the drive into modeb BUT IMPORTANTLY use fw toolbox to flash the fw

JF has killed lots of hitachis on me on all setups i have had when fw toolbox has workked on all setups.

You really ought to try JF in  PORTIO32 mode for Hitachi drives. Haven't had one bad flash with it so far (which is more than I can say for FWTB).

i have done it in portio mode in xp vista and win7 with same results - trust me im not the only one with the opinion. you are lucky enough to have a setup that favours hitachi's a lot of us dont.

the fact that fw toolbox flashes successfully and JF doesnt with the exact same harware amd OS points to a bug in the code/incompatibility with certain hardware

only giving asvice if you manage to get it going with JF happy days, im not bashing JF i love it for all other drives just find its no good for writing to a hitachi, will dump it fine just lost too many drives to keep trying to get it working.

Thanks A TON for the fw toolbox tip!

Unfortunately I can't find another PC with SATA ports. Think the BIOS error is because the drive isn't in mode b. Can a 79fl be put into mode B with the resistor trick? or anything else that doesn't involve using a PC?

No, either get a modchip, or do the 79audio unlock trick

From what I read, those are done AFTER mode B. I was asking if there is any way to make the drive appear in windows first.

Just curious - how are you enabling portIO32 mode in JungleFlasher (for Hitachi's)?

im assuming he means installing the portio drivers for the pci card instead of the via ones.

There's a distinct difference between installing the PORTIO32 drivers and enabling it for Hitachi Drives.

Since you said you've tried it in JF already, my question still stands.
