Lets say something like this is a problem for them to fix without risks, couldn't it just be something simple, like they're going to counter act with the Lite-On drives that will be in later shipments? Losing a very small amount to piracy & those going on live(which you can't even do mods with this hack) is maybe not that big of a deal if they get these new drives out soon. MS could just be looking at the big picture, down the road. They could be saying, "Do we care about 10,000(?) or 30,000,000(?) in the long haul?" The xbox piracy was just out of hand & actually pretty simple for people to do. If you couldn't do it yourself, you could buy them modded or have a pro do it. Sammy drives are scarce & probably will be even more so now. This hack is a lil more tedious & out of the reach of the general public. Plus im more than positive the Lite-Ons will have security. Just my 2cents.

Im thinking we should all be thankful we were early adopters.  Cheesy

How long does it take for M$ to het a Windows SP together... months from the first Beta SP... when did the Xtreme firmware hit the public? 3 weeks ago

So I don't tink M$ did not have time enough to come up with a bugproof solution to the "problem" in this update.

Hey i have a question, I was reading somewhere else about checking the disk in the kernel...is that possible, to check this disk in the kernel and then ban you whenever you sign back onto live?    or could you only be banned when you're online witht he hacked firmware or game?

i know no one knows what's exactly happening yet, but i'm just wondering if it's possible and plausible for them to actually do that, to check you while your offline, then ban you the minute you get online.

live bans take 24 hours to trigger, so don't get too happy just yet.

My wife logged on with my original xbox running evox about a year ago and the ban was instant.  If you are assuming that microsoft is going to sit for 24 hours and let database of hackers accumulate then you should say that this is speculation.
so what does microsoft actually ban just the xboxlive account if so would you be able to start a new xbox live account or do they ban your isp too, just wondering if it ever did happen would it be easy to get back using xboxlive again

they ban the xbox itself, not the account.

Since flashing I have no intention of using live on this box, I really don't see the point of using the dual firmware nonsense.  What I do want to know is whether or not there is a safe way to put box back onto network in order to stream from compy, without pulling internet connection?  Does the 360 communicate with microsoft in any other way except  through live?

Most routers will allow you to entirely block the MAC address of the Xbox360 (which it can also tell you) from either sending or receiving any internet data.

I'm not sure that they can detect it unless you're actually using a backup disc in the drive.  The most plausible method would be to check physical data located on the disc through the process of a the console sending an unexpected command to the drive.  Thus, they would get a read on something we haven't set up the disc to spoof.
Long before the new dashboard arrived, a completely normal command was already transmitted to get the physical format information from the disc. The data which is returned to the console screams: 'I AM A BACKUP'.

A dashboard and/or game update can check the contents of this data very easily. Why they aren't checking it is anyone's guess ..

Yeah, I should have worded that better. I'm sure you already know (maybe not everyone else) that in the hitachi It's stored in RAM at 3bab0.  All of my dumps say RITEK in the ascii side.  It's definately interesting that it's not being check as of yet.  It would be rather easy to modify the FW to read the PFI from its on-disk location and do something similar to the SS relocation.  I looked at 3 dumps and came up with the same PFI for all:

24 02 F2 80 dc 88 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 02 31 10
00 03 00 00 00 FC F8 9E 00 03 0A 8F 00 00 00 00

So locating that in a different sector should be too much more difficult than the original SS relocation.  It's read in a different fashion, but that's because I think it is read regardless of some of the other mini-checks here and there that determine xb1/360/DVD/CD.

wouldn't it be possible to modify the fw to write the PFI sector into ram upon start? that way it won't have to read it off the disc...
