just to note for ANYBODY INTERESTED.
I personally found most usb devices i had plugged seemd to be recognised no problem on the xell startup, whereas booting into linux just hung and booted no further when detecting stuff. a quick removal of my usb mouse and swopping it out to different model mouse worked instantly for me!
Something to do with the usb stack still for keyboard and mice??

I had it hang randomly once or twice detecting an usb keyboard, but the rest of the time it booted just fine.

There are USB devices which are plain buggy. They don't support re-enumeration, i.e. they are not listening to a port reset. This is not a problem when those devices are used with windows (for example), because you plug them in once, and they will be enumerated once.
A possible workaround is to disable those devices after xell, I'll think of something here.

Worked for me just fine. Except of couple of hangs because of connected usb stick from where xenon.elf was loaded. Booted to X. Does anyone tried booting linux from HDD?

I have the kernel booting on my Xenon through USB, now how I make XELL or the kernel being loaded detect the iso or a block device FS image in the same USB device XELL loaded the kernel from ?
Sorry... I could not find instructions on how to use Xell anywhere and sadly I'm more used to windows than to *nix...

Successfully booted Linux from HDD. vmlinuz from ssmurf kernel-v2.6.24.3. xenon.elf from usb stick. Xell support loading elf from HDD would be grate in the future.

Actually imho, if xell have a function where you can go to a boot menu if you press certain key on startup, that would be even better.

Good tip. This worked well for an SD card that failed to initialize a second time after its initial boot. -----------If the SD reader USB boot fails, then turn off console, switch around the mouse and SD reader, turn on again......then SD reader boots.--------- Not ideal, but seems to be a consistent workaround for now.

Well... The 360 keeps power on the USB rails even when the main "core" is shut down. That's for the guide button on wired controllers or on play and charge kit be able to turn on the console. So here's the catch: Since the USB power is kept all the time on the ports and it isn't fully reset by XELL, the USB stick is left on a "unexpected state" and XELL fails on the next boot attempt. The solution is simple... Hook the BOX and last thing you do is plug the USB stick with the kernel (even after you connected your keyboard) and then turn it on. If you need to reboot, make sure you take the USB stick out of the port after the shutdown is completed and then put it back before turning it on again. If the stick is "compatible" this procedure should reduce the remaining bugs/glitches to a bearable minimum.

Right now, I am still waiting for my VGA cable to arrive in the mail. I am just playing around with the console without any graphics at the moment. If the linux booted correctly, does the LEDs on the RoF turns all red?

Dude I'm not sure you should even be touching anything but your 360 controller to play a game. Even then the dashboard can be confusing so best of luck. If this is a Language translation issue my bad and you may want to ask the ?'s 1 at a time because of it. Then we may better understand the post and not just think someone is blathering on

This has been mentioned many times, especially is the first post on this page
Get the Gentoo linux for Xbox, and copy vmlinux to a flash drive, and name it xenon.elf
Start your Xbox, insert the CD and plug in the flash drive.
Pray.
It may be helpful if people start to read around a bit

I presume you have your box hacked and you boot to Xell. Yes. you have to copy and rename vmlinuz from Gentoo bootCD to xenon.elf copy it to usb stick (compatible usb stick because usb stack of Xell is still buggy) and insert Gentoo Live CD and connect USB stick power on and if everything goes well you will be greeted from some penguins and after some times X will start.
