Hello
Please excuse my English it's not my native language.
I have just recieved my new Hitachi rom version 0079FL drive in the mail. The old drive is the same version.
My problem is that I am unable to aquire the passkey off the old broken drive since the controller is dead.
Now would it be possible to physically transfer the firmware chip from the controller onto the new drive? Or this some way to get the passkey from the motherboard?
I need some way to make the new drive work so I can play games.
Any suggestions before I throw my Xbox out the window?
Also does it void warranty if I have opened the console and the DVD drive? I only the manufacturer warranty from Microsoft wich means I would have to ship it from Iceland to get a new one.

you can desolder the old chip and put it on the new drive.
and yes, your warranty is of course voided.

Thank you, I'm not sure where the firmware chip is located though. Could you show me on this picture?

Is it hard to do? If someone knows how to solder a modchip on the drive, he would be able to do this right?

I thought so. I really wish I had just shipped it to Microsoft before going through all this trouble. For some reason I thought it would actually be as simple as plugging in the new drive an voila. Why do Microsoft have to make things so complicated Sad

ha ha if you don't know what the firmware chip is then i'd suggest not attempting to work on it at all and send it to a professional instead, nevertheless...the firmware chip is the black chip marked "SST"

hehe I definitely won't attempt this myself, then I would only end up with 2 broken drives.
It looks complicated with all that black gooey stuff around the chip...
Thanks for the help guys. Anything else I should know before getting someone to do this?

Hey I just got an idea, now it might be far fetched, but would it be possible to reverse the situation. Instead of flashing the DVD drive to make it match the motherboard, is it possible to dump the BIOS from the Xbox360 motherboard, install the passcode from the new DVD drive into it, and then use that flash the motherboard.
Does that make any sense?

It makes sense but it is not possible.
To remove the black epoxy, use a heatgun, heat up the area and chip off the epoxy from the bottom carefully with an exacto knife
