A friend asked me to flash his liteon so he can read the new format,I flashed it and all went good so i decided to flash my own too  as I already had everything setup,I hardly use the drive lately and my system is about 6 months old.Unfortunately my system doesn't read any discs anymore (movies, backups, cds) i flashed it many a times i even flashed it to a prior version 1.5.I opened up the drive and I noticed that the laser doesn't light up at all though the rest of the mechanism looks to be working (focusing mechanism?)
the pot values seem to be good.I didn't open the drive to  retrieve key as i already had the dummy files (multiple ones, tried all of them used the dsbfixer to check if my dummy file was correct ).I even cheked microsoft support page  fixed the date as that was also a possibility.
Can anyone tell me what to do next ? can my laser be fixed or isn't it broken  ? I am on a tight budget lately Sad

the lens moves up and down so I guess the ribbon is good.Is there a way to power the lens externally to see if it goes on ?

What if it just moves a little bit up and down (like 1/4 cm)? Because that's what mine is doing. You're talking about it moving completely up and down, right? Although I did notice that mine will return to the bottom position if I slide it up to the top and then close the tray.

he means the actual lens moving up and down, not the laser unit moving back and forth.

I do NOT give support by email, PM, ICQ or whatever. Anyone annoying me that way will have his balls removed. With a rusty butterknife. Slowly. And I'll enjoy doing it.

Oh, as in closer and further from the disc? No, it doesn't do that.

That's similar to what mine looks like, except my laser doesn't do the up-and-down motion.

@ the youtube vid...that's normal, when that is happening the laser is focusing thus the laser light (red) should be on however yours is not
