check this out.

Edit: no firmware links

I did a friends 360 today, he claims he got it off ebay. It plays retail games, but I can't for the live of my find the key. I've looked through the hex and nothing looks right.

I think it might be a debug unit.

anyone want to take a look?

check your PM's...I can't find the key and debug units will not play retail games unless the xex is patched. Also (iirc) the debug units have DVD keys...correct me if I am wrong - as I said in the PM, bad dump otherwise I have no idea  Huh

Gigabite is right, debug unit do have drivekey, even though it is not necessary.
I have examined a devkit before (i'm not lying), with samsung drive. The normal location of where the drive key suppose to be is there, but all FF'd

yeah well you see that's the thing...the key isn't there, and it's definitely a retail because it's playing original games (which it wouldn't do unless the xex was patched...and then that would mean the game needs to be burnt and hacked firmware needed to run it). I would like to know how one came about to discover where the DVD key was...anyone ??

@Gigggles,
Are you asking how the location of drivekey was discovered in the first place?

I'm not sure, but from my point of view, it was randomly guessed??
If you scroll down the firmware ms25 in a hex editor, you will see a ton of gibberish until you hit a small string that is isolated. someone must have dumped multiple firmware, and noticed that the string is different

FF can't be the key, because the Xbox woudn't boot if you change it to that

and when you inserted your key at the regular place in that firmware ? (just overwriting whatever was stored at that place)

That, it worked.
It's just an ordinary MS28 firmware except that the key is FF'd

So maybe a fluke at the factory ? Meaning the drivekey stored in the 360 is also FF-ed ? They match (since the drive has the same key) yet looks terribly strange Cheesy

Has namgorf tried to flash an iXtreme ms28 fw with the key FF-ed ? It should work if the above is true Smiley

It's not possible for the drivekey to be FF, or the xbox would not boot

Ok, I gathered from your remark ("Yes, he sended the firmware to me
It worked on my Xbox (but obviously would not boot game)" that you flashed the firmware as is to a samsung you had and put that in your xbox.
So I thought that what you meant was : With his 'key' (FF's) it only played dvdmovies, no games, which makes sense of course.

And when you replaced the FF's with your key, it then worked and played games.

But I've must have misunderstood then, sorry.

ACtually, i doubt it.
A friend of mine have a similar xbox, where the drivekey does not come into play at all.
I have not looked at the xbox personally, but it is strange. He was able to boot games EVEN with the eeprom phyisically damaged and unable to dump the firmware in dosflash (benq drive)
