I repair 360's on a daily basis. recently I did the X-clamp repair for a client and it worked great. But after he got his 360 home the laser on his console stopped reading games (so I figured that the laser just went bad.). So he brought me his second 360 that had the RROD and I did the X-clamp fix for that console and it worked great. BUT... After he got his 360 home it stopped reading games just like his first console. Is it possible that his power source could be frying his dvd drives? Or can something else be causing this? Or is it just coincidence?

(edit @ 20:17 Pacific Time) I just hooked up the 360 to see how it is behaving... And the drive doesn't even try to read the game. it just acts as if there is no game and says "open tray"

so did you fixed the console, without even knowing if it was capable of reading a game before?
must've been total coincidence.. x-clamp fix doesn't break your drive now does it? these drives must've been worn before the dude brought them in.
it doesn't stop reading games from one moment to another...
so maybe that client is pulling one on you, saying they did read games when they previously did not?

maybe he couldn't tell if it was working because the console itself wouldn't try to read the disc anyway? on account of it having 0102

still it sucks. if you can not know if the drive didn't work before, this guy who's bringing in these 360's might be playing a game with you..
i would say: i fixed what i was suppose to fix.. your red ring, now if you want that drive to read games again you'll have to pay for it

I agree with you 100%. My concern now is how to fix the DVD drives (he is paying to have them fixed). I'm wondering if replacing the laser will fix them because the laser doesn't even try to read the game. As soon as I put in a game, I get the "open tray" message on the screen.

swap them out with a known working drive see if it works.. replacements aren't that expensive these days if you look good

If another (working) drive also doesn't work, then replace the sata cable. Had this happen twice before, constantly open tray or Play DVD messages (even with originals), after I switched the sata cable it worked like a charm.

I had this problem as well. I think it is due to putting the DVD drive back in place while you heat the console. Since it is right above the flaming hot GPU, it may damage components on the drive PCB. I started leaving the drive off to the side while heating, and placing some cardboard slices over top of the GPU heatsink to keep the fan from blowing on it. Since I started using the cardboard, I have not had this problem happen again.
Oh, and I never got any of the drives working again (at least a dozen) and had to chop them for parts.

The first thing I thought was, 70 degrees is kinda cold. Then I went, "Ooooh, Celsius." Why can't America use the same set of measurements as the rest of the bloody world?

metrics ftw. http://www.kathleencarroll.com/sounds/track3.mp3btw squeept, funny no sense rage: "you're a towel" haha.. theoretically you can't melt solder just by using heat (aka towel trick - where you wrap in your 360 to become really hot)

btw squeept, funny no sense rage:
"you're a towel"
^^^ Classic South Park quote from the first Towlie episode. Anyway, nobody was talking about the towel trick. I'm assuming everyone that says they do the "x-clamp replacement fix" is setting their consoles on fire as one of the ever so technical steps (As a side note: I can't help but laugh when I read about how you're supposed to use plastic washers for the ones that are directly in contact with the board because you don't want anything to short out. Yes, god forbid you short the grounded cage to the ground plane on the motherboard.) Is everyone just being elitist and calling that the towel trick now? Now, just to be a tool: gigabite, want to make your offer more enticing? How about under 100C? Do I get a consolation prize like a handjob? You don't even have to pretend not to like it.
