Hi,

Can someone please tell me whether anybody has had success installing Kreon V1.00 SH-D163B SB01 onto the 'newer' Samsung SH-D163B SB02 drives, and subsequently getting it to work with SctromXtract360 v4.0 & the latest Xbox Backup Creator? I have had zero luck so far.

I tried to get Kreon into the drive with sfdnwin - nocheck, but had to give up with 'cmd fail'.

In the end I had success with Sctrom's DosFlash32 (1.7 Beta), and considered the drive 'Kreon flashed', but both SctromXtract360 v4.0 & the latest Xbox Backup Creator refuse to read a X360 disc or unlock the drive thereafter - even though they both acknowledge the drive to be a 'Kreon'.

With Kreon software installed, the drive is perfectly usable. Reads CDROMs and DVDs - no problem at all.

I have scoured XboxHacker.net, and two ideas/suggestions seem to stand out.

1). The SB02 version of the SH-D163B cannot be flashed. There are a few posts outside that seem to back this up - but nothing solid.
2). My copy of Kreon v1.00.bin for SH-D163B was bad (what is the MD5 for this file?)
2). My motherboard sports a VIA VT8237 chipset, which a few posts seem to indicate is a 'show-stopper'.

Should I revert to my trusty VT6421 SATA card and start again?

Any insights welcome.

Update..

Well it's not the Kreon V1.00 binary file, as I have tried the xbins version, with identical results.

Also, it's not the VT8237R chipset, as my standalone VT6421A card produces the same result in two different PCs.

That only leaves the drive. Looks like the SB02 version of the SH-D163B/BEBE drive is different some how. I think the fact that no-one is talking success regarding the SB02 confirms my suspicions.

I'll keep at it for another day - then call it quits.

Hope this helps anyone else buying SB02 drives (IF I'm right)  Grin

Update 2......

Well sadly, that's it. I've run out of ideas - and I tried every trick I could think of.   Smiley

So for good housekeeping, here are my findings so far. They are facts, but the 'not working' conclusion is purely hypothetical.

Model :- Samsung SH-D163B/BEBE (second sticker on rear says TS-353B which is the Toshiba twin)
Originally Reports as TSST corp DVD-ROM SH-D163B SB02 SCSI CdRom Device
Firmware :- SB02
Hardware:- A
Version:-  B

Purchased from www.play.com

cannot be flashed successfully with Kreon V1.00 Firmware Alternative for SH-D163B.

To clarify, the drive CAN be flashed using DosFlash32, but the Kreon functions will not work in either Schtrom Xtract V4.0 or Xbox Backup Creator 2.8.

Flashing with Kreon V1.00 for SH-D163B will NOT destroy or brick your SB02 drive - it will still function afterwards as a DVD Reader (DVDVideo +-R +-RW etc), but Kreon functionality will not work (no unlock), no detection of Xbox360 original.

Finally, to try and give something back, I can attach the original Samsung binary from the SB02 firmware, as read by DosFlash32, for any curious bit-heads, if needed.  Grin I'm not sure of the attachment policy here though.

If anyone can prove me wrong about SB02, please shout out. I would love to be proved wrong.   Cheesy

Thank you for posting, I just received a s02 drive today and was getting ready to do everything you tried.
You saved me hours of eff'in about.

I got mine from http://www.tekheads.co.uk

If a solution appears I'll be sure to post here.

Update: I could not flash with my VIA VT6421 but on my Intel® P35 Express Chipset it worked 100%, tested and confirmed. Try another chipset mate.

Thanks Riverpatrol,

That's great news. Looks like I'm wrong then.

So the bottom line seems to be that VIA chipsets VT6421 & VT8237R cannot handle either the flashing function or the subsequent use in XBC (or Schtrom).

I'm assuming from your post that you have had success in both flashing an SB02 to Kreon V1.00 and using the same SB02 in both XBC and Schtrom thereafter, using the Intel P35 Express Chipset.

So to recap, for those coming up behind......

Samsung SH-D163B SB02 does work with Kreon V1.00 (alternative), and XBC & Schtrom

- but avoid using VIA chipset VT6421 and VIA chipset VT8237R, as neither work properly for either flashing or use in XBC or Schtrom.

Phew..... I think I'll lie down now.  Grin

To confirm:

Flashed SB02 to Kreon V1.00 and then used XBC on In Intel P35 Express Chipset.

Did not try Sctrom.

I also just installed the samsung sh-d163b with sb02 firmware. I'm really new at all this, i thought the d163b was the end of it, i didn't know anything about sb01, 02 etc!

How do I find out what "chipset" i have and get one that will work to flash Kreon to my new drive? Is that the PCI card?
