I bought an Xbox 360 off Ebay with a missing DVD drive... I have since placed a working DVD drive it from another Xbox 360. It reads DVDs and CDs, but not games. Any clue on how to fix this??

One last note, I was told you can flash the chip from a Linux disk or something... can anyone verify this. I mean, with the new drive it reads DVDs fine, and CDs. If I can get it flashed, can I install another drive...

Well - If it reads DVDs and such, any way to pull it using that Linux utility I've heard about?

no. to run linux, you need to have a working drive with valid key. if you don't have the key, it is impossible to get it without having the drive that belonged to the console.

probably, your only hope is to ask him if he has a copy of the DVD key and or still has the original DVD drive (and if he sold that all separately, track down who bought it, and ask them hehe !...why not ey ?)

Ok... here is an idea, I'm noob at this so be gentle with me.
I burn games from PC to Xbox 360 hard drive, or whatever... The DVD and CD functions still work for the drive, so can I play games from a hard drive on the system with a non-married drive?

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but if I own the games, can't I burn them to hard drive... I work for a government office, not tryign to pirate anything, just am one of those guys who like to know how stuff works...
I'm one of those people who like to watch mechanics and ask questions... I hate to miss something simple I can do on my own, ya know? There has to be something I can do to make this things into something more than just a DVD player shaped like an Xbox 360.. any ideas or mods? Heard people play games off a linked PC... is that true? Like I say, I'm noob... I don't know.

you're well aware of what you're doing i see that feeling lucky popping in a spare 360drive into that bricked 360 without drive? sadly you purchased something stupid and in case it didn't come with the original dvdkey, it'll make you look even more stupid blatantly put. kinda sad you could've saved your money by reading about 5 minutes OR one simple google query which would've got you this (and many other information): http://forums.ps3scene.com/lofiversion/index.php/t485357.htmlyou failed... try to use internet (google) instead of posting rather simple question that on a technical board like this makes you look rather uninterested in what you're doing. wanting to get spoonfed so it seems. i LOL so hard yet cry quietly when i see yet another thread like this and oh yeah there's been loads. guess most aren't willing to do any learning edit: your 2 latest reply's are rather funny. burn games to harddrive? interesting. if you like to know how stuff works, you might not wanna bother people on here as there's more interesting things for them AND start get to work on using google to find answers for these rather simple questions of yours... man you cannot do crap with that 360 w/o a valid dvd key... playing games off a linked pc on a 360? dude if you have a 360 you'd know that this definitly doesn't work, but you ofcourse do not... ps. this is not the most appropriate board for your questions, as this is not technical or research related. try learning how to use a forum too (reading rules etc) that will help to not aggrevate people on forums go to Tech Support 360 for your nontechnical stuff, that is sadly enough covered about a million times on internet... but you just had to ask....

Yes, it was a bad purchase, I'll agree... but blazing someone for doing so only shows how rude you are... If a person makes a mistake, and you can't help him, just stay silent... If you know something on how to help, pitch in...
The point of forums is to ask questions, I did... Do I want you or anyone to "spoon feed" me, no... If you have info, point me in the right direction, if not, why bother to waste your time just being downright insulting?
I'm not stupid, I would rather be stated as ignorant.... I was ignorant to what the capability of what I purchased would do, or not do for that matter... To sit there on your high horse and treat people like morons, must be refreshing, huh?
As far as my willingness to learn, I am willing to learn..... isn't that where asking questions to people who are "knowledgeable" in such things come in to play?
Just can't let it go, can you... Maybe you show look up the definition of a forum. You know, people get together, asking questions and all that.... Sorry my question(s) weren't jelle2503 material. The other people didn't seem to be so HORRIBLY bothered by my question, they were polite... but that might be a stretch for you... so... just don't bother answering anything I ask... How about that?

i also bought a box off ebay which came with a drive made out of spares, it didnt have the right pcb for that benq so i emailed him and he sent me a bag of benq pcb's,lucky for me the right one was there, try asking the seller for the orignal drive or if he has the matching key to your console, also you need to know what drive was in there in the first place, coz if you manage to get the key you'll need to spoof the drive to match the orignal drive, there is no way round it so if the sellers no help, your 360 just a dvd player, sorry but its the truth
