geebee do you know there is a difference between the VT6421 and 6421L ? because i got a card with 6421L chipset and i cant get my hitachi recognised in windows. i tried the crossed wire method and slax disc but windows cant even boot up prperly its so slow and at some point it hangs so i need to restart.

What drivers are you using, if using ones from the provided disc you should get the updated ones from VIA. Otherwise make sure the card isnt sharing an IRQ with anything important. I had a problem with the card sharing resources with a USB controller and experienced the same issues, moving the card to another slot fixed the problem.

old bios versions for the SIL3112 chipset don't support ANY sata dvdroms, so that's probably the case there. unfortunately on most cards, you can't update the bios either. if you read closely, the text only mentions HDDs, never speaks of dvdroms.

I do NOT give support by email, PM, ICQ or whatever. Anyone annoying me that way will have his balls removed. With a rusty butterknife. Slowly. And I'll enjoy doing it.

I have a pcmcia sata card with a sil3112 chipset (no name manufacturer and now try to get updates  Wink )

at first I thought this card is a pain in the a.. but linux 2.6 still has some ancient artifacts like a legacy ide-driver for that chipset which worked for me. On the silicon-image page I found a update for the 3114 controller which promised atapi support but this does not fit to my 3112..

I got the card working with the hitachi drive and the old ide driver but PLEASE consider the following:

1) you can buy a sata controller on which the support is (in the best case) very unstable...
2) you can buy a sata->pata adapter and you are well off (at least this works for me like a charm)

So my suggestion is: If you have some spare bucks buy a sata->pata adapter! It makes life much easier

ok,will do as instructed, thanks alot for the heads up.The reason why i would rather get a new card is cause i could exchange it from where i bought it and i tried looking for a sata->pata adapter and had no luck. Its kinda hard to find those things where i live.I live in Indonesia.BUt I do have the usb adapter for sata,so might as well try that also.Bought it for only 10 bucks.hehe

good news, but for usb-sata connection please keep in mind that you have to insmod usb storage with fix_inq_vendor_id=YOUR_USB_SATA_VENDOR_ID and fix_inq_product_id=YOUR_USB_SATA_PRODUCT_ID as mentioned in the 3120L-linux thread before you plug in the usb-adapter ...

i use this one

http://shop.norskit.de/nit/default.asp?PageNo=DEFAULT&DeepLink=PM10000D%2CHardware%2CCONTR%2DSATA%2DPCI110026242

it's an inline s-ata card with a Silicon Image SIL 3112ACT144 Chipset.
It recognizes the drive (shows it on booting) only after setting it to modeb with the slax-cd.
