Using An Oem Dvd Drive Instead

As one of the lucky Hitachi owners, I have watched and read many pages over the last few months. I figured that if the key is located on the dvd drive, its extractable and we have a firmware for the samsung. What are the possibilties that we can use our own samsung DVD drives with the modifed firmware. Granted the drives would have to be very similar but this would give us the oportunity to muck around with drives at no risk to our consoles. A simple switch and an external setup would allow us to switch between which drives we use.

I'm probably going to get flamed, it may be a daft idea, but i thought I'd float it.

What are your thoughts.
