Same situation here, talked to geremia about that, he suggested us (me and guerriero_di_pace) to invert tx & rx and after that it worked like a charm... The problem was simply this: tx of my ebay serial interface has to go to rx of the liteon and tx of the liteon has to go to rx of the serial interface . In this case we have not tx->tx & rx->rx .
yes I can confirm!! we usually connect A-A B-B C-C and so on... but in this case is not right connect tx-tx rx-rx, transmit to receive is correct

Hello to all.
I have a few questions for you experts.
It didn't work, sorry reg1: 54 DVD key: 00000000000000000000000000000000 Seems NOT a good DVD Key!!! 00 00 ......
I got thesame question, i trying to find the hardware error. i can sure the SATA address, comport address & IRQ is correct,i use XBOX360 console power to liteon DVDROM, and i guess the question is in DVDROM power source or PC mainboard.(Trying hard...... ) My SATA controller is VIA VT8237R south bridge, work in non-raid mode. Can you post you SATA controller & power source?

I saw this problem happening many times because people are forgetting to do the jumper inside the LiteOn drive to connect the TX and RX points that are open!

My St3232 works fine ... tested on BUFFALO router with firmware DD-WRT , i get all status on HYPERTERMINAL ! The Buffalo router use 3.3v GND TX RX ,.. perfect ! and now my DRIVE IS DEAD.. I have burned ! reverse cable conection ! Good luck to all !

did you connect the external PSU GND to the GND of the drive? also, is it a regulated power supply? unregulated ones will give out anything from 3.3 to 6+V.

In Soulheavens tutorial he has a red arrow pointing to point 9 on the conectivity kit but says it is point 10? Which is it that you connect V+ to 9 or 10? Thanks.

I tried to get all the components at rat shack, they had them all, but the 2n3906 transistor. Can any other PNP transistor be used?
Thx
Chan

This seems to be happening alot...after trial and error i found that using the xbox on/off button to power the drive, just sends a close command to it and gives the above...power on xbox and close drive, then pull the power plug from the back of the drive, follow the tut and when it comes to power on the drive just plug it back in (do not power on/off the actual console). Works like a charm and drive stays at half way, it doesnt close when powered on causing the read to fail

Thx Chan Ok, for the DIY'ers out there not afraid of soldering, I have successfully dumped the liteon key using a HOMEBREW RS232 LEVEL CONVERTER, made from only 10k resistors, transistors, a 0.15uF capacitor, and a diode. Follow this schematic: Here's the changes I made to make it work: 1. Replace all 4k7 resistors with 10k resistors (so it uses only 10k resistors) 2. Replace the 100nF (0.1uF) cap with a 150nF (0.15uF) cap. The capacitor must be non-polarized I used a 2n3904 and a 2n3906 transistors, and a standard zener diode more info: http://picprojects.org.uk/projects/simpleSIO/ssio.htm

Just to let you guys know I have used a MAX232 with a 3.3v supply voltage and extracted four liteon drives 1st try everytime without any hitch. Tested all four with MS28 drives changed key and spoofed working like a charm. There is no problem using a MAX232 at all. You don't need to mod the circuit you can just change the MAX3232 for the MAX232 if you can olny get this. The capacitors 100nF's you don't have to change and the pinouts of the MAX232 and MAX3232 are the same.

What is the difference between eject state open, and eject state closed? ...worked!
had to start with tray halfway in...but not with eject state open, had to have eject state closed!
Thank-you Geremia! .....and sorry about my cracking the $#!ts with you before....I was getting very frustrated as I had worked very hard on doing my research before posting.

The last state of the tray when the power was on, lets say the tray was closed then eject state is closed. If you open tray and powered of the ROM instantly without tray closing then eject state open. You need eject tray closed state to extract key. You should rather use the paper clip to open tray half way from closed position is most probably the easiest way.

actually i've found just opening the drive with a paper clip doesn't work for me, to get it to work I need to eject drive and pull power plug while it's halfway closing otherwise it will return no dvd key.

Just type into the blank white field in Hyperterm when it's connected (9600, 8, N, 1) and the Tx and Rx is looped (pins after the MAX3232 chip).

What application are yo using? The version I'm using will not let you type anything. Just type into the blank white field in Hyperterm when it's connected (9600, 8, N, 1) and the Tx and Rx is looped (pins after the MAX3232 chip).
