PLEASE, if anyone could just spare 3min of there time to pull out their multimeter and report back on the resistance readings between legs 14 and 11 on a working MAX3232 chip, it would be very helpful to me. There is no connection between 14 en 11 on the MAX3232 Chip

Really!?!? That sux. Then it means my MAX3232 chip is possibly not faulty, and it's possibly something I'm doing wrong. But I still don't get an echo when I short rx/tx on the MAX3232 dongle and do a loop test, which makes me suspicious that my MAX 3232 dongle is still faulty. Thanks for the info though Spider85, much appreciated If anyone feels like being really generous, could you please short the rx/tx points on your working MAX3232 dongle and try a loop back serial test, and let me know the results. Here is a good guide on how to do it http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3450 , in only takes like 2 minutes. According to this Wiki http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/Xbox_360_Lite-On_DG16D2S_Extract_Key a working MAX3232 dongle should echo when performing a loop back serial test when the rx/tx points are shorted, but it's wording regarding this is a little ambiguous so if someone could try it for me that would be awesome!

Hey Troy, I've tried that exact method you described. I'm sure I have a faulty MAX3232 chip, could you please test the connectivity between pins 14 and 11 on your MAX3232 chip for me with a multimeter and let me know if you have any connections between them, as there is no connection between pins 14 and 11 on my MAX3232. Going from the diagram I'm pretty sure there should be a connection between pins 14 and 11 on a working MAX3232 chip. PLEASE, if anyone could just spare 3min of there time to pull out their multimeter and report back on the resistance readings between legs 14 and 11 on a working MAX3232 chip, it would be very helpful to me. mine doesn't show any resistance between them, and it worked fine. resistance is the ohms value, right? i'm not much of an electronic techy, i just know how to solder stuff if i can do anything else to help, let me know

Short rx/tx on the working MAX3232 dongle. Plug it into the PC COM port. Then open "All programs">"Accessories">"Communications">"Hyperterminal". Then open a new connection, give it any name (ie, test), and use the following settings: Country/Region: Anything (ie. United States) Area code: Anything (ie. 1234) Phone number: leave blank Connect using: Which ever COM port you plugged your MAX3232 dongle into Then next use the following COM port settings: Bits per second: 9600 Data Bits: 8 Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 Flow Control: None Then "Apply" and "OK" Then just type anything, if it appears on the screen, then you have a positive 'echo'. Check out this guide if you get stuck http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3450Any help here would be greatly appreciated, as I am completely stuck as to why it's not working, and I really want to blame the MAX3232 dongle.

Hey XPunked. Check your serial connector cable. Make sure it go straight thru. Not crossover. ie... pin1 MB COM1 to pin1 serial port connector, pin2 MB COM1 to pin2 serial port connector, pin3 MB COM1 to pin3 serial port connector.etc. I doubt you have bad dongle. You will need to open the serial port connector to check.
This fixed my "no $#!t going to COM PORT error message"
Feeeeels goood!

@xpunked or anyone willing to help I have the same dongle you have (maxim3232pce), jumpers same way, but I can't even get HyperTerminal to work. I put an extra jumper on rx/tx pins on the dongle and plugged it like that in COM1 (had to remove the metal shielding though), because I have no cable here. Do I need an extra cable between the com port and the dongle actually ? Or should it work plugged right into the com1 port just as well. Started up Hyperterminal, settings like in the tut you linked to. But nothing's echoed back. Also tried without jumpers, but nothing. Is there any other way I can test my com1 port to rule out that being the cause (and actually blame the seller of the dongle ) ? edit : just tried the whole process for the heck of it. But as expected, I get a good Inquiry.bin, but sega error because the com port's not working. Checked in bios, no errors there. Checked in Windows : 03F8-03FF, IRQ4. Device working correctly.

Just found a very easy way to check if your com1 port is actually working. Just put a jumper on pin 2 and 3 on the com1 port OF YOUR PC. Start Hyperterminal and do the test. And.. sure as hell my com1 port works. What I've typed in, echoed back. I disconnected and quit Hyperterminal. Then I removed the jumper and started it again, did the same test and of course nothing came back. So.. elaborating on that.. I put the jumper back on my MAX3232 dongle. First tested rx and tx on the bottom of the dongle. Continuity. Then tested connection 2 and 3 on the connector. Nothing ! According to my reasoning, shouldn't these points have continuity (read : beep ) or am I missing something here ?

Yes it Echo's without problems! Ok, wicked!! Cause my MAX3232 dongle doesn't 'echo', which still makes me think it's the MAX332 dongle that's the problem. I am still waiting on a new one to arrive. idog, you seem to be in the exact situation as me. I have also had to remove the shielding to physically get into my PC, maybe this is the source of our problem? Maybe the shielding is the ground? I have also ordered a RS232 cable, so then I leave the shielding on. I will post any findings here. Thanks for all the input everyone, very much appreciated

I ordered 3 of them (2 for other modders), the other 2 haven't been tested by them yet, but as soon as I hear their findings I let you know. In the meantime, is there anyone who can supply me with a working one, selfmade or out of the box, I don't care .. as long as it works ? Of course I'll pay for your work, parts and shipping.Another update : put back on the metal shielding so GND is now ok from pc to dongle... still no hyperterminal fun.. so I doubt your RS232 cable will bring any relief

this is annoying... here is how you do it step by step:
1. open up liteon 2. bridge resistor points 3. solder on tx, rx, gnd, and 3.3 4. Boot up dos 5. connect power to 360 and dvd drive 6. eject drive 7. pull power plug of 360 and dvd drive 8. close dvd drive with your hand half way 9. plug in 360 and power it on 10. plug in dvd power, and sata cable from your computer 11. connect adapter to com port 12. run dvdkey xxxx (xxxx = your sata port) 13. proceed to smash your head against the wall because it was that damn easy

I know this (and yes, it's annoying ), and done it like that, but the problem is my dongle. If the dongle doesn't respond to the Hyperterminal echo test, then I can do 1-13 all day long (well, I think repeating 13 will cause me some headache after a few iterations ), but it won't solve the com port not responding message.. Anyone in Holland/Belgium who can supply me with a working dongle on short notice ? this is annoying... here is how you do it step by step:
1. open up liteon 2. bridge resistor points 3. solder on tx, rx, gnd, and 3.3 4.

Ok... So I tried the other Liteon drive and I judiciously tried every single jumper setting possible with both rx/tx the right way around and inverted. Every single time I got the same error: "It didn't work, sorry ... Sega:54 ... COM port anyways seems to work" Another thing I noticed is when I started testing I had forgotten to jump the 2 bridges, and it was still giving me the same result. I could still get the inquiry.bin and the identify.bin even though the bridges weren't jumped. Can anyone in the know confirm what "Sega:54" error means. I am convinced it is the MAX3232 dongle. So I've ordered another one from eBay (below). Can anyone confirm that this one works? I will be watching this thread for any breakthroughs Did you receive and test this dongle yet ?
