Ok guys,
I now double checked everything again, reversed Rx Tx cables to the powersource of the drive, resoldered the two points on the drive, tried the paper clip method and the connectivity-kit method to open the tray, but no luck - I'm still only recieving the INQUIRY.bin and IDENTIFY.bin, but no Key. Error is, again, Sega:54 COM port seems to work anyways. The interesting thing here is that its always that error, even with reversed Tx/Rx. Well, I 'm gonna try the DVDKey 32, but maybe someone could point me in the right direction here, as I'm slowly loosing my mind with this piece of sh** drive....
I'm having the EXACT same problem. I can get the inquiry.bin and identify.bin but no key.bin. It give the error "Sega:54 ....COM port seems to work anyways" I am getting the same result with rx/tx swapped either way, which is strange as I can get identify/inquiry.bins no matter which way I set up rx/tx. It could be the half tray closed thing, as I can not get the drive to power up and have the tray stay half way open. I am using the 360 to power the drive, here's what I've tried and the results: -disconnect SATA from drive (just power cable from 360 connected, MAX3232 soldered on), turn on 360, eject tray, close tray, power off 360, use paper clip to eject tray half way, power on 360 => Tray closes!!!! Argh!!! -disconnect SATA from drive (just power cable from 360 connected, MAX3232 soldered on), power on 360, eject tray, close tray, pull power form 360 before tray finishes closing, power on 360 => Tray closes, Argh!! Also there are some jumpers on my MAX3232 dongle, I have just left them as is. There is a pic below. Does anybody know what I should do with these? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello again,
@XPunked Seems like you can't really get the Drive in the right mode, try to not power the xbox itself down, instead leave it running through the whole process, and only manually disconnect the power cable to the drive itself - at least that did work for me until I got my connectivity kit 2, thou

My on-board COM1-port (03F8) is blown and I have to use a serial-port PCI card (A010).
And as doskey for DOS (16bit) has a hardcoded COM1 port, I would love to be able to change the port address manually (in hex).
Has anyone ran doskey through a debugger to located the hardcoded address of the port yet?

Thanks for poitning out I had to read better. That did the trick for getting the correct key from my Liteon drive. However, I'm now getting KEY.BIN but no INQUIRY.BIN. I have the same error as someone already posted, but I'll copy his original image so you know what's going on (exactly the same issue here). ... and there it stops. If anyone found out what we're doing wrong, please comment.

Does it matter? You got the key...use Toolbox and spoof a flashable drive, preferably BenQ...

yeah lowering the default reading speed from 12x to let's say 5x, would really let GTA4 (or any of your games) benefit from way less popups and loading times.

I was thinking the same, however, the two tutorials I use both say INQUERY.BIN is needed to spoof succesfully, because they hold the Liteon unique's ID. And they don't mention any way to skip it.
Quotes from both guides:
a) "... Select Tools and Spoof Firmware. In the selection box pick Custom (Requires inquiry.bin) and click Apply Spoof." (uses 360 Firmware Toolbox) b) "... then click on "Browse" to select the firmware source, and select the file INQUERY.BIN previously dumpedfrom your lite-on:" (uses 360 Drive Switcher)

you dont neccesry need the INQUERY.BIN you can use hex editor and edit the file manualy. follow this artical: http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/Xbox_360_Lite-On_DG16D2S_Extract_Key

Awesome, right on it! Thanks a lot for the link! Edit: This guide uses the same method... Quote: "The identification string for the Lite-On drive is saved to the INQUIRY.BIN file. This file was created during the dumping process." However, I'll see what happends if I only edit the key and not the identification. Edit 2: Just tried that, gives me Error 66... Bad or unknown DVD drive.

First thing I need to do is try get the tray to stay half closed. I have to get the half closed tray figured out so I can rule it out as the cause of the error. It could also be the MAX3232 dongle, as someone else already mentioned thay have the same one and are getting the same error. I have ordered another one. If I figure it out I will post how I got it working. To other poeple getting this same error: Could you please post if you are getting your drive to stay half closed during the DVD power up? Because if we are all not getting the half closed state correctly, then this is likely to be the cause of our problem. Any more suggestions about what I'm doing wrong are welcome:) PS. I'm using a VIA 8237 on board sata, but this has always worked for my BenQ's. So it should be right yeah?

I have done three out of four with success. The one I can not do has continuity between rx and ground, the other three do not. Weird thing is the unit works fine, but I can not retrieve the key for the life of me!!! jumpers don't work for this method!!! just invert the tx and rx and it will work Ok guys,

Ok well I got the tray to stay half closed. With the same result "Sorry it didn't work ..... Sega:54 .... COM port anyways seems to work". Here's how I got the tray to stay half closed though: Power up 360 (SATA disconnected, only power connected and MAX3232 dongle soldered on), eject tray, close tray, pull power cable from DVD drive (not from the 360, the 360's still powered up), used paper clip to open tray half way, plugged the DVD power cable back in. DVD is now powered up with tray half closed Xboxchan, what do you mean by continuity between rx/ground? You mean there was not infinite resistance between rx/ground. Because I have resistance (not zero, not infinite) between ground all the points tx,rx,3v. I have another Liteon here which I will try tonight and post my results. Can't be F'd doing it now......

Ok... So I tried the other Liteon drive and I judiciously tried every single jumper setting possible with both rx/tx the right way around and inverted. Every single time I got the same error: "It didn't work, sorry ... Sega:54 ... COM port anyways seems to work" Another thing I noticed is when I started testing I had forgotten to jump the 2 bridges, and it was still giving me the same result. I could still get the inquiry.bin and the identify.bin even though the bridges weren't jumped. Can anyone in the know confirm what "Sega:54" error means. I am convinced it is the MAX3232 dongle. So I've ordered another one from eBay (below). Can anyone confirm that this one works? I will be watching this thread for any breakthroughs

For key retrieving, you need a LVTTL-RS232 converter (max3232 with 3,3vcc) max232 with 5vcc seems to do the job anyway, i've not tested, but a safe way it's to connect only the RX line of max232. You must use COM1 embedded on motherboard (0x3F8 IRQ4)
1 Poweron drive, eject tray, poweroff drive, close eject switch, manually close the tray to halfway. 2 Poweron PC, boot MS-DOS (from floppy or pendrive) 3 Connect sata and serial, poweron drive (tray must stay half open) 4 DVDkey [sataport] - For running again the app, poweroff and on the drive or repeat all steps
For rs232 troubleshuting, consider that Liteon by default outputs an endless stream of 0x00 and 0x01 at 115200 8N1, you should see it with Realterm with display set to hex
Seems most people having problems did not read carefully the readme. For the inquiry.bin hang, are you all using FreeCom dos? What's the sata controller? Try MS-DOS For the people with "COM port anyways seems to work", try Realterm on windows to see if the converter receives the stream of 0x00 and 0x01

Ok thanks for helping me out with my 'no inquiry.bin' issue. The latest version of Xbox360 Firmware Toolbox allows you to spoof the drive as Liteon without the use of that file, however this doesn't give you factory defaults. I have no clue what the real deal behind that is but I suspect MS can easily find you and ban you, don't care
