You could read the forums for about an hour and find your answer in there.  The threads dealing with this are very popular of late.  You'll most likely have to hexedit your mtkflash file to have the right ports. (All sata controllers of the same chipset are not created equal it seems).  Read up, learn and apply.

A:\>mtkflash r backup.bin

Try the command:

mtkflash m /r backup.bin

and use the tutorial from xbox-scene.com

Are you using a hex edited mtkflash or the original?

Fail to open input file, is usually an error associated with the floppy.  You might give another floppy a try to rule it out.

You can try the original hotswap method using a sata HD.  If you don't have a sata HD you can use your 360 HD.  After the HD is recognized before you run the dump command, perform the hotswap.

i have the 8237 chipset on my soyo (kt600) board. only way i could get it to work right is:

 1) boot to floppy (w/ mtkflash, and the mtkflash.typ)
 2) type mtkflash  r /m orignal.bin (no dont press enter yet)
 3) unplug sata cable from 360, and turn on xbox 360
 4) plug in sata cable to your mobo and press enter

NOTE: connect a ground wire from your 360 chasis to your pc chasis before you do anything !

also, you dont have to disconnect your hdd(s) or dvd(s) although its not a bad idea

I disconnected every drive except the 360 and floppy.  This made the 360 my primary master (option1).

Did you try both the hex edited and non-edited mtkflash on the above method.
If your computer recognizes the drive and you are unable to read the flash it must be mtkflash.
Did you download it, or hex edit it yourself.

Had the same problem. That is the tutorial I used. It works. I used the edited mtkflash but I think it is not necessary:

" After 3 nights of trying to flash my sammy using my Via 8237 chipset, i finally did it. I had Hex edited my MTKFlash more times than i can remember, and none of it made any difference.

I was getting port errors and Staus = 50 should be 71. This was really getting on my tits, but i didnt give up. I found a method that worked.

I booted my floppy boot disc, I turned on my 360 using the eject BEFORE i typed any command, i used the MTKFLASH r /m /sata orig.bin command to read my original firmware. i pressed enter, my sata chipset was showing in option 3 ( If it doesnt show first time, just press F3 and press enter) , i turned off my 360 and then pressed number 3 on my pc, DOS reported a port error, i waited 10 seconds and the powerd up my 360 using the eject, at this point my original firmware started backing up my firmware onto my floppy. NOTE - I DID NOT dissable or remove my ide before doing this.

Once my ORIG.BIN was backed up onto floppy i created an x32.bin using the latest Xtreme32 software.
Copied my x32.bin to my floppy, rebooted my pc and used the MTKFLASH w /m x32.bin to flash using the same method as above

I did uae a modified VIA mtk flash which can be found here http://rapidshare.de/files/22716234/mtk183c_VIA.rar.html
Im not sure if it really made much difference, but its there if you wanna try.

I hope this helps anyone with a Via 8237 chipset who has been experiencing the same problems i had.

Good luck "
