backups can be ripped and played, but only on a flashed drive of course. takes longer, though.

After ripping a disc (either original or backup) does the game disc need to be in the DVD drive to play it off HD?

of course, otherwise MS would be giving everyone a free ticket to piracy.

I hope it kind of doesn't drift off the thread, but ok so these games get stored on the HDD (which we have full acsess to) and theirs a check that says check if this game is in the drive. How is such check implemented (yes I know it's not "out" yet and the system may change etc etc)...and bearing in mind (signature wise)would it be possible to exploit ? and is the correct DVD key needed to rip the game to HDD (please be no ...but please test it seriously)?? btw..."The system is an OS, based on the structure is based Ping 17" and all the other "comments" if you will - seriously I could invent something better gigabite

They're stored in chunks of 162 MB files, named Data0000 and up. There seems to be some sort of encrypted header, starting with vePx on the first file. I also found this text inside, later on:
at 0x12000: MICROSOFT*XBOX*MEDIA (seems to be the header of the game disk itself)
and later on:
MICROSOFT*XBOX*MEDIAXBOX_DVD_LAYOUT_TOOL_SIG
The rest appears to be encrypted or compressed.
And yes, the correct DVD key is needed of course. Otherwise it's merely another movie DVD for the console. Also, it's not possible to rip xbox 1 games to HDD.

Can you take the hard drive from the console that you ripped the games on, and put the HDD on another console? and run the games?

yeah lowering the default reading speed from 12x to let's say 5x, would really let GTA4 (or any of your games) benefit from way less popups and loading times.

Im guessing taking your HDD to another 360 would be fine since you need the game disk in the tray anyway, Nothing wrong with taking your game disks to your friends house and playing them.
I'm curious if there is a way to intercept the packets sent from 360 to HDD and visa versa over the SATA bus?
Also, Is there a way to access the memory cache on the HDD itself? And is that data encrypted/signed?

Yes the update was installed on the downgraded xbox360. you need to have the kernel 1888 to successfully update the 360 with this beta.

Yes the update was installed on the downgraded xbox360. you need to have the kernel 1888 to successfully update the 360 with this beta. but to come back to my question again, you still need an exploitable 360, dont you? and since you can run kingkong on an exploitable anyway wheres the point of an exploit in this beta?

Thanks for confirming this is fully implemented - being a beta one never knows. As Gigabite was wondering do we know 'How is such check implemented'? Is it still because of the SS on the disc un-locking the DVD drive?

The SS/DMI/PFI are still read as if the game was played off the disk.

Arakon: in your opinion... now that you've seen the work they put in up to now, would you say they were they justified (the time was well spent) in skipping any sort of spring update?
Looking forward to this HDD install feature, at any rate - anything to cut some more "white/grey" noise off the 360's... jet propulsion system.

I don't like the looks of it so much yet, although it doesn't seem to be any less comfortable to use. If themes are possible with this dash eventually, that'd help the looks. The avatar stuff is missing completely in this beta, but the HDD install is well worth it, yes.. MUCH quieter since the drive no longe runs, and faster load times to boot.

hey Arakon, Heard you got the new dash up and running. Do you know how the installation with multi disk games work (lost odyssey and blue dragon). I know its required to install all the disks but do you need to disk swap? This would be a real solution for disk swapping haters or lazy people . I also heard that Lost Odyssey has the entire game on all 4 the disks but the swapping is needed for dialogue/cut scenes. Do you know if this is true? If its true than the 360 only rips the needed data i assume and not the 21gb in total.

I haven't tried it (the console with the dash is dead now). I doubt they actually implemented that feature, since the console can't know which data needs to be copied and which belongs to which disk, the games demand a disk change at a set point and don't actually check first if they have the data available, and of course, the security sectors differ for each disk.
