I have successfully booted into Xell with that image (Xenon), using a VGA cable. I was able to recover my DVD Key that way too (Xell shows the fusebits on launch, so I got my CPU Key that way and flashtool can show the dvd key with that and the original dump). However, when I try to launch the linux live CD, it is stuck forever on "trying to boot from cdrom".. will the linux/apps need to be different compared to the original KK exploit to work on this one?
There shouldn't be any difference booting Linux once your in XeLL. Sounds more like your DVD drive is having trouble reading the media. This is a very common problem. Try burning the LiveCD at the slowest speed possible or use a DVD-RW.

I'm also trying to burn my own bootloader disk, but same prob here.
I find it very confusing though. Reacd should read (raw sector(s)?) starting at lba20. But when i hexdump XELL-Bootloader-sda2.iso, the bootloader (the actual code) starts at lba32/0x10000 (the binary actually starts at lba21 but seems to have padding in front of it).
So what's the deal? It's not actually reading from lba20?
Exactly, it reads raw sectors. Depending on what program you use and what type of ISO you create, the starting lba can vary.

Thanks alot, this is going to be fun:) btw, are there any updates/fixes in this patch regarding the framebuffer? The one used in the beta2 live disc gives a broken picture at 720p, only 1024x768 seems to work.
I believe the only real fix in this update is the USB core drivers. Allowing you to install to an external USB drive, since the old patches had a bug that caused the system to crash during large read/writes on a USB drive.

You call this asking for help.. i thaught there was a way to crack the box whithout a chip ?I know there is the softmod way but it requires an external chip on usb or maybe there is a way of cracking the box's chip
Sounds more like your too lazy to go read the thousands of guides and tutorials... BTW: There's this sweet invention they call "spell check". It might make you look like less of an idiot and get serious answers.

I hope the linux kernel does not have to be contained in kingkong disc. This pre-compiled kernel does not work for everybody, as least for me. I have to change xenon fb driver as my component cable has overscan problem on my lcd. also, someone might want to customized the kernel as well, which is impossible with this approach.
Shouldn't be a problem. Just use ultraiso and replace the kernel on the iso I created..

tmbinc has made a lot of progress on 3D support which would give us xbmc working in Linux. I am sure sound support would follow soon after any graphic drivers are available. But progress is slow with few developers currently working on the free60 project.

Well I managed to get the latest version of Firefox installed. Seems like Debian wasn't set up to use the security repository. The following command was required: deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free Utar Yeah sorry, just set it up to use the default ones. I had no luck with ubuntu 7.10 and gnome. Seems like its a problem with the Compiz and algix stuff they added into gusty. The way we had it running before was dumping the squashfs data from the ISO they released brefily when gusty came out. It still might be possible to run it that way. But I would recommend sticking with ubuntu 7.04 if you really want to use ubuntu, or debian since it runs fairly well on the 360. Plus its maintained a lot better.

Funny enough the first time I rebooted the bootloader did freeze after the 5..4..3..2..1, although this is the first time it has ever done this!
Second reboot worked and the install is proceeding.
Yep sorry you wasted a disk, I just put the corrected version that I have been using on my ftp. Just use the same link as before, but make sure to clear your history/cache so you aren't opening the same file from your temp folder. btw: The file size might be the same, but the data inside @Xell is what was modified. Tomorrow I will take a closer look at ubuntu 7.10 with my free time also. I will post here if I have any luck debugging that problem.

I'm running the script.
Is the boot loader any different to the one you posted for the ubuntu 7.10 install as it has the same version number? I never had any freezing problems with the other bootloader.
[edit: I have just done a file compare and both are identical]
Utar
hmm looks like it is the same... Maybe I forgot to upload the corrected version heh.. Let me know if you have any problems with the version your using.

Do you have a feel for what the error is caused by, i.e. is it something fixable or some deep seated compatibility problem?
Not really sure atm... I will see if I can figure it out. But its not worth putting a lot of time into with the lack of updates with ubuntu, since they dropped powerpc support months ago. Plus ubuntu is just a build of debian and they are virtually identical. Other than some minor details to make ubuntu easier for new users.

Thanks, I'm just about to give it a go.
I'm not 100% sure about the error. Do you mean that after I run the script, I need to apt-get install xserver* to make it work, or will X/GDM crash no matter what?
Utar
Nope that only fixes a debian debootstrap install.

Cheers, it's greatly appreciated.

Ran into the same error. Looks the same as with Debian if you do a fresh install with recent packages. That was easily corrected with apt-get install xserver*. I have no clue what package fixes it though. Will take some further research... All the current changes I have made can be found here though: http://www.free60.org/wiki/Ubuntu7.10It will install gusty from scratch, but crash shortly after X/GDM loads. Interesting thing is XDM loads fine, but will not login to gnome all the way. Can test that by doing apt-get install XDM Then select XDM as default when it asks. Start with /etc/init.d/xdm start Also I recommend burning the new ISO boot CD I posted. It contains the newer version that gives you a visual output of the boot loader. Just fancier.

I tried the apt-get install commands but it complained about a conflict between two packages and didn't install anything. I've been thinking it may just be easier to reinstall Ubuntu, is it possible to modify the script at: http://www.free60.org/wiki/Ubuntu7.04to install 7.10 instead? Just change: debootstrap --arch powerpc feisty /mnt/ubuntu http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/ubuntu/ to: debootstrap --arch powerpc gutsy /mnt/ubuntu http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/ubuntu/ On a linked matter I've been wondering how the initial hard drive boot CD works, as this is all quite new to me. Is the CD just an initial boot loader that passes control over to the linux distribution on the hard drive, and is therefore independent to what is installed on the hard drive. Or do you need a custom CD for each distribution, i.e. if I installed Debian could I use the same boot CD as for Ubuntu? All the CD does is load the Linux kernel and is not tied to the Linux distro in any way...
