read the lot and it is shocking to me what complete and utter bull$#!t sony has fished out of forums and sites,so biased!! (obviously, but come on!!) not one lineof useful information, or blogs or even a single word on the actual hacks or the progession of legitimate homebrew or open source SDK, just pages of kiddies screaming about backups. can noone point out to the judge that geohots CFW doesnt even allow backups to be ran and is at the present state not actually breaking any copyright protection system for the games that is on the system? weak case from sony, and a good lawer for geohot. i'd donate towards his fees. * Gazcoigne sits with popcorn and watches drama.

perhaps your hdd is dying, or has bad sectors throughout that is causing it to pause.
was it a brand new hdd?
you do not need to 'prep' the harddrive, apart from adding the partition for xbox1 BC if you wish to play xbox 1 games.

best way to remove them is to hit them with a big blob of solder
the SMD led's will simply wipe off, and leave clean shiny pads for the new SMD ones
then i use tweezers and a steady hand to place the new ones
takes patience and practice
good luck!!

Also, i can personally confirm it WILL WORK with the WD VELOCIRAPTOR series.
Because i Just got done stuffing one in my Xbox 360 Slim.
Shows up as an official MS 120gb drive. except about an average of 20% faster across the board so far. sometimes faster.
it can be done. i have the walkthrough mostly finished. the basics are you need to solder in a wire to the existing factory SATA power connector (pins 13 14 & 15), tap that into a 12v source (DVD drive works) and then reassemble using only 1/2 the rubber boot.
cooling mods required. I'm using a 60x60x25 maglev fan from sunon on a modified HDD Bay cover. works very well.
THANKS MODFREAKZ. fo realz.
defo would like to see pics and a breakdown sounds good.

could have shorted it out with a loose wire or small solder ball that you didnt notice.
not being able to get a flash controller also indicates that the NAND is corrupted.
try the NAND shorting method to see if you can get access to it again and try to rewrite your image.
check all your connections as well and run a dry toothbrush over the mobo around the cygnos and NAND to ensure there are no shorts.
