Yeap definently floppier - at first I initially thought the same (they could just be the same thermal pads without the pink bit on them) but they are definently not. Who knows - if it's any constilation it was a core (not arcade...the "origional" core) gigabite

Xbox 360 / Xbox 360 General Discussion / New RAM Thermal Pads
|

Ok, so after sending in (one of) my RRoD Xenon's...I get the box back today - open her up and I have my original drive that was in there (Hitachi 47). Ok well, at least I don't have to waste a replacement drive...take off the fan duct, and I see no HANA ! I got back a refurb Xenon, with my original drive (M$ repair center in Australia) - oh well this console I got for 100% free and i'm going to sell it anyway. While I was dissembling it I took the motherboard out and I noticed that they have put on a new type of thermal pads on the RAM, they are white, stickier, same size and much more softer and floppy compared to the "normal" ones. Wether they actually are better or even do anything dose not even fuss me...I still can't believe I didn't get a Lite-On - here is a link to a picture for those interested: http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00730jk0.jpggigabite

Xbox 360 / Tech Support 360 / Re: Warranty about to expire - what would you do?

dam...you have the oldest working box I know of !! (especially for an 05 model) - Would M$ check or even bother to verify the RROD. Since this failure could be intermittent in nature I don't think so, right. Yes, they do check for RRoD - if it's anything other than RRoD (for example DVD drive not working) you must pay the "out of warranty fee" - What is the usual repair process?[/quote You register your box unless you have gone on LIVE (if you havn't, go to https://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx?scrx=1 ) and call up M$ - Will they just change the board, or send a new console? They change the board and drive (in my case recently, today actually, instead of replacing an Xenon board with an Opus as they "usually" do now...and put in a Lite-On drive, I got back a refurb Xenon board AND the original drive which was a Hitachi 47 ) - What are the pros and cons about getting a new one? If you get a new one (as in an Opus) you get the 65nm CPU...cons any board you get back will not be susceptible to the timming attack, unlike the one you have now, and you will get a Lite-On drive - that's about it for cons Jaspers are not out yet...i'd probably just keep the console until it RRoD's, then either do the x-clamp mod and hope it lasts forever, if not, sell it on eBay and get a new box gigabite

do you have a MU (Memory Unit/Card) or a HDD ? ... I wouldn't say it's the drive's laser, I would either say it's the firmware (speed) or media or whichever storage device your using

Xbox 360 / Xbox 360 General Discussion / Re: Shocking news of the new fall dashboard
|

hehhhh....the size of the NAND on the Xbox 360 is 16.5mb, usually when an update is released it's not a full 16.5mb it's more or less a patch. So (in simple terms) it goes, boot the base kernel > apply this patch > apply this patch > apply this patch and so on. When the new dashboard comes out it will most likely be "another patch" though god only knows if you will be able to switch back and fourth between "the old xbox experience" and "the new xbox experience" as the new xbox experience (has been put fourth) as optional not necessary like all updates released previously...just be patient it will be here soon gigabite

best drive for reading...eBay the words "Kreon drive" - best drive for burning (IMHO although most will do) Pioneer 11x. That is 111, 112, 115 etc because they always work, and you can pick them up for a great price ($29AU)

yeah that or pay M$ to repair it...$132AU (probably about $2,000,0000,000 US ) for a brand new console (only) is good, if people knew, 99% of the "RRoD repairer's" would be out of business (considering most around here charge $100 up) - I stopped cause it was to much fiddling around and you honestly cannot guarantee a RRoD repair no matter how good you are or what "method" you use. Most of the new systems now are fine, tbh I am running my first console I had from late 06 (Xenon)...pimped (leds, mods etc..changed it about 4/5 times...opened maybe a few more times) to the max but STILL running stock x-clamps...never had RRoD, never even seen a heatgun, M$ or anything...I put it down personally to being properly cooled (I ran it for literally 2 minutes before modding it) from day one. Hmm, I wonder how long the oldest console has lasted (actually being used...you can't cheat if it's preserved in a glass cabinet ) gigabite

personally, I have tried both ways and personally I have taken a "modded" outlook on both...that is (obviously my "method"..heatgun etc etc etc - shut up if you disagree) put the screws through the motherboard (because in comparison it gives you alot less board warpage) and then drill holes in the grounding cage (personally I used to use a 1/4" hole for each screw) so that just barely the tops of the screw poke through but not to much so the motherboard is still sitting off the grounding shield...but that's what I just used to use

cool...swear words are now quoted as "----" (fvck )anyway...don't do that, reason in short: solder doesn't even melt at that temperature thus you are flexing the motherboard so the fix is temporary if that gigabite

the easiest ways to check the serial number are on the back of the console, or go into system blade

well since no one else is replying..i'll either try help or get the topic locked Is it possible to update the Gentoo LiveCD beta V2 with a newer source, such as 2008.0? No idea..i'd probably guess no (yeap...guess :O) How about the ubuntu install, are there new instructions to do a HDD install with 8.10? I don't know about 8.10...but I know you can put it on the HDD How can I run a xex (maybe king kong) directly from 360 launcher menu to start linux (HDD install), on demo kit? Don't know..but I know you still need the CD anyway even if it's a HDD install gigabite

well in theory...if you "cleared" SECDATA.bin (e.g downgrade then upgrade to whatever kernel) then I suppose you should be fine (though I don't know how M$ uses them...e.g do they compare yours to your last one, yours to a "normal" one etc). I didn't find SECDATA.bin...the great robinsod did (or maybe it was tmbinc who told him who told me who did a bit of testing with others and so forth) - SECDATA.bin has existed since 4532 iirc gigabite
