Hmm...wierd. I never was able to duplicate any problem. Any idea what the issue eventually was?
2  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / Re: Fatal error when visiting the site on: August 31, 2011, 02:48:18 PM
I cannot duplicate this issue. Could it be ISP blocking for "hacker" content or something silly?

Does an alternate domain (.net) or the direct IP make a difference?
3  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / XboxDeveloper.NET on: May 05, 2011, 07:26:58 PM
One of the old domains / sister site to XboxHacker was XboxDeveloper.NET (in the timeframe of the original Xbox).

Over time, I let the domain lapse as the need for the site fell off, in addition to upkeep issues with the server and data and general lack of time.

Out of curiosity, I was checking what happened with the domain (used to be held by ad squatters for a while). On whois, looks like the owner is now Microsoft.

Yeah, I think that's about what I'd like -- a summary of the most recent forum activity. Perhaps from the most useful subset of boards.
5  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / Re: Front Page Again? on: April 01, 2011, 04:06:53 PM
Other than a bieber pic, what else would people be interested in on a front page? :-p

Here's a super-sloppy mashup of stuff that I can pull in from the forums. It looks like crap, no need to state that :-)

http://www.xboxhacker.net/front.php

Clearly, most of this is not needed. Was thinking of maybe just showing a few recent threads and perhaps latest announcements/"news" board postings. And, forum login + search or something.

Wow, thanks for all the nice posts :-)

Makes me feel bad that I neglect XBH these days :-/

Glad to know it still serves a useful purpose!

Sorry guys!

There was a MySQL update that borked the membership table. I did not notice right away, and then I did not have shell access to get it fixed. Xantium (who supplies our hosting at present) dumped and reimported the database on another machine to fix the db error. Seems to be ok now...

I could put an icon up, if someone makes one Smiley
9  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / Re: What with the ads? on: January 14, 2011, 05:44:41 PM
Is it just me, or do those stupid Google text ads show irrelevant crap half the time anyway?

Considering replacing them with some affiliate link to something like Amazon selling controllers or XBox Live cards...
10  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / Front Page Again? on: January 14, 2011, 05:43:06 PM
Hi all.

What's the opinion on having a "front page" again? Thoughts?

The forums always were the highlight ever since the site began almost 10 years ago (whoa!?).
11  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / Re: What with the ads? on: November 23, 2010, 03:22:37 PM
It appears that most any click of the links is counted, but how much a click count seems to vary pretty dramatically. A few cents or very small fractions of a dollar.
12  General / XboxHacker Site Discussion / Re: What with the ads? on: November 15, 2010, 09:03:04 PM
At the bottom of the page.

Ah yes. Good old days of pay-per-impression...hehe. You've got me...that is the least evil.

IMO get those really awesome interstitial ads that come up between loading pages.

Ugh...

To be more clear, no, it will not get worse or out of hand. I intend to keep them to links at the top of the page only. None of that post inline crap (I hate that...). None of that flashy stuff that jumps or sings or covers your screen. Ugh.

Perhaps I'll ask:

If I place 1 ad somewhere, where is the least evil? What if 2?

I am using text ads, and a thin line at that.

SI

Hi all,

Long-time XBH members will recall that I never (ever) had grotesque ad content. We had some ads in the past (never in the forum posts themselves, only at the top and side).

Recently, I've let the site just be due to lack of time.

However, I recently took up an interest in Kinect as a new target...and could use some spare cash to fund this. (I am merely a graduate student).

I do hope these are non-intrusive and don't substantially degrade the site.

I'll take concerns on this seriously, especially if their revenue is not worth it. It looks like about $1/day.

Kinect xex's import the files NuiApi.h and NuiApi.lib. I havn't debugged a kinect xex yet, but that would probably yield the information you are looking for.

Any idea what the API provides?
17  Research & Technical XboxHacking (Xbox 360) / Kinect (TECHNICAL) / Re: Hacking the Kinect on: November 06, 2010, 02:14:55 AM
There is probably some sort of crypto handshake between the 360 and kinect over usb.

That sounds like some good speculation; someone will confirm or disprove that shortly I have a feeling.

A $2000 bounty: http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2010/11/04/the-open-kinect-project-the-ok-prize-get-1000-bounty-for-kinect-for-xbox-360-open-source-drivers/

Microsoft is displeased:

But Microsoft isn't taking kindly to the bounty offer. "Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products," a company spokesperson told CNET. "With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering. Microsoft will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant."

ifixit has a teardown with pics posted: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Microsoft-Kinect-Teardown/4066/1

I think I may add a board for Kinect to the Tech forums.
